my headcanon is that post-BB, Danse learns to appreciate the small things in life in the commonwealth, he learns that people are people no matter what they look like (inside or outside) and people are weird little gremlins, capable of the best and the worst, sometimes at the same time, and he starts to accept it. and slowly he becomes the man who's chopping wood and helping people fix their weapons and taking the next patrol around the block and all he asks for is enough caps to live (regularly, old people and mothers will give him more), and he drinks beer, just enough to feel comfortable, and he lets his sarcastic side come out (but he keeps the deadpan expression because keeping people guessing about whether he's joking or not is half the fun). he just... lets himself enjoy the small things he didn't have the time for when he was a soldier on a mission, the sunrises and sunsets, the quiet evenings with dogmeat, the smell of food, the kids running around... he misses the brotherhood, of course, but he also becomes that quiet hulking dude you can count on and honestly, the role fits him.

and writing this i realize that i headcanon him becoming more human once he knows he isn't and isn't that funny ?
