isagi & bachira, blue lock chapter 49

happy holidays i am here to make my annual hellsite post, this time about blue lock because my god i cannot with some of the lines in this (spoilers: they’re gay)

let’s take a look at chapter 49, this iconic line by bachira:

i commonly see this line cited as one of the big bachira/isagi moments and while this translation definitely not wrong, those wouldn’t be my exact word choices

this is the original japanese panel:

bachira: 俺が欲しけりゃ、奪いに来い

the verb used here is 「奪う」 (ubau), which does indeed mean to take without permission, but has a much more aggressive feel to it. 「奪う」is more commonly translated as “rob”, and overall there’s the implication that the thing was taken through unlawful means specifically by force, in a pretty obvious/in-your-face kind of way

the japanese verb that has a closer feeling to the english word “steal” would be 「盗む」 (nusumu), which is more commonly used in situations where the thing is taken secretly without the person noticing (of course there are exceptions; but generally it’s used for more hidden/secretive types of action). 

feeling/imagery-wise, the difference is like one person prying something out of someone’s hands vs. trying to sneak into someone’s room at night to take something

tldr the line is a lot more aggressive and forceful in jp, and i think what would’ve conveyed the feelings better here would be something more like

“if you want me, come and take me by force”

Sukuna-P memes? What’s that?

the P stands for "producer" which commonly refers to the people "producing" idols in the entertainment industry; ppl in idol game fandoms often call themselves [character name]-P to indicate their bias~ i think it originated from the idol master franchise?

so sukuna is known as sukuna-P because he is constantly paying a lot of attention to megumi and sees potential in him/wants to see his abilities grow (??) just like how a producer would do with an idol lol

megumi and yuuji's VA talked about it on this radio show (translating just the beginning):

if you look the name up in japanese dictionary, this is what it says:

definition 1 is pretty straightforward, says that it's the name of a weapon from japanese mythology

definition 2: another word for dick or dildo.... and gives an example of it from a famous kabuki play

I don't mean to use you as google translate so please ignore this message if I'm bothering you, but I've got a huge curiosity regarding that one time Gojo called Geto his 'one and only' because I remember once reading Sasuke say the exact same about Naruto. Is this like a thing in Japanese, does it have any sort of specific meaning that isn't well translated? Thank you already, and again sorry for bothering!

haha no its ok! its been a while since i read naruto but im assuming you are talking about these lines (lmk if thats not the case!!)

in volume 72 sasuke calls naruto “オレの唯一の友よ” (ore no yuiitsu no tomo yo) = my only friend. naruto later responds “その唯一がオレだからよ” (sono yuiitsu ga ore dakara yo)= because i'm your only

what gojo said about geto was “僕の親友だよ たった一人のね” (boku no shinyuu dayo, tatta hitori no ne) = my best friend, the only one. 親友 (shinyuu) is most commonly translated as best friend, but i think its more appropriate to think of it as a really really close friend? so a lot of people tend to have more than one, hence why gojo's emphasis of "only" stands out.

i guess the main difference is that sasuke doesnt have friends meanwhile gojo does LOL but he only sees geto as the one true/best/closest friend. the words they use for one & only are different but mean pretty much the same thing!

jujutsu kaisen 151, on what maki said

alright ive been forced to come back to this hell site to make this post because i cannot take this maki top energy slander

i want to talk about this panel here, which specifically i’ve seen these two variations of translations from (left is VIZ and right is TCB scans):

while both of these translations are technically correct, the original japanese  says “抱いてやるよ” (daite yaru yo)

抱く (daku) technically means to hug, and it’s conjugated w/ やる (yaru) which means that the action is being done as a favor for someone. another way to conjugate this verb for a similar meaning is あげる (ageru), but yaru is less polite and more condescending (especially in this context). the tone of the sentence is very 上から目線 (“from a high perspective”), meaning that maki is definitely talking down (quite strongly) on naoya; and i think this does come through from both of the english translations pictured above.

but now the part that drove jp twt crazy. 

while 抱く(daku) does technically mean hug/embrace/hold, it can also be understood in a sexual way: specifically, to top (i swear i am not making this up LOL) 抱く(daku) means you are topping, and 抱かれる (dakareru) means you are bottoming — so essentially what maki is saying can also be interpreted as  “i’ll top you (as a favor)”

now, i know this initially seems really out of place in english, but it actually makes a lot of sense given the history of their relationship and naoya’s personality in particular. we all know that naoya has been sexist af and spewing nonsense like women should always walk 3 steps behind men etc. so in some way, reverting that typical male/female dynamic is actually a really great taunt — it’s VERY insulting to naoya’s fragile masculinity lol some ppl have even gone as far as to guess that perhaps its a line that naoya/others have said to maki before (maybe under the context that she has no value except to serve men — but ofc this is all just speculation), and now maki is throwing it back right at him to, quite literally, establish dominance. bottom line is that I don’t think she meant it literally but the reversal of dynamic that the line implies seems pretty obvious and makes a lot of sense as a double meaning addition to the line.

i also saw some of jp twt talking about comparisons with this panel from the manga “kenya kagyou” (disclaimer: i’ve never read this manga; akutami gege references other works in jjk all the time so ppl were guessing this was the manga being referenced here). one character used the exact same form of “shiranui-gata” in sumo and he said “dakishimete yaru,” which usually means “hug tightly”; but here the play on words is instead on the verb “shimeru,” which can also mean to strangle.

anyways, i guess what i’m trying to say is akutami gege could’ve kept this line/used similar variations of it to convey the same “i will hug you (threatening),” but instead chose to use “daite yaru yo.” this specific combination of words really is quite often sexual (i think a good comparison for the degree of sexual connotation is the phrase “netflix and chill” — where yes, it could also mean actually only netflix and chill, but most ppl, even if they dont mean it, are at least aware of the sexual connotation). gege has a history of playing with double meanings a lot (stuff like sukuna’s “魅せてみろ” or “去ね”), so do what you will with that info lol sumo is also a sport in which women are traditionally banned from competing in, so maki taking on this pose w/ the line fits well with the subverting gender roles theme that’s going on as a big “screw you” at naoya 

in conclusion akutami gege said maki tops yall

You mentioned (stuff like sukuna’s “魅せてみろ” or “去ね”) could you expand on that/link to a post that does?

ch9 (or ep 5 in anime), sukuna says “魅せてみろ伏黒恵” (misetemiro fushiguro megumi), which is commonly translated to “show me/show me what you’ve got fushiguro megumi!” this makes sense because if you just hear the line without knowing the kanji, it sounds like 見せてみろ, which means exactly that. it’s probably safe to assume that that’s what megumi (and every other normal person lol) thought sukuna was saying when he heard it

BUT the caveat here is that sukuna uses the kanji 魅 instead of 見, so the line actually translates to:

bewitch me/enchant me/charm me/fascinate me fushiguro megumi. the official taiwanese translation opted for "make me fall for you fushiguro megumi" which i think conveys the message well lol

oh yea and in ch 118? sukuna says “魅せてくれたな” (misetekureta na) = you’ve made me fall for you fushiguro megumi

the other one is from ch 119, what sukuna says to shigemo after the fight ended:

去ね, pronounced “ine,” means go/leave/be gone in modern jp/kansai dialect. But in old japanese it can also be written as “逝ね”, which is the command form of “die.” so shigemo thought sukuna told him to get lost but in actuality sukuna was telling him to perish lol which is why he was so shocked in the later panel

hi! omg i saw your blog post about hq 336 (120%) line and i was squealing at the cohesive breakdown of nuances of each phrase. i know you're inactive here, and you might not see this message. but SJ is going to include a setters' poster in the new illustration book and each of the setter has this one word to capture their character. according to some translators, it means 'devotion'. if you have time and energy, i hope you can expound on the kanji? thank you and hope you're safe!!

and yesss brace yourself for a long post!!!! while i agree that devotion is probably the most straightforward translation, here’s some more context:

so akaashi’s word is 尽瘁 (jinsui)

尽 means til the end/giving everything

瘁 means deteriorating health/tiredness from sickness

= “i will give it my everything until the end even if i die in the process“

the term comes from the 鞠躬尽瘁 (kikkyuu jinsui), a yojijukugo (essentially 4-character idiom in japanese; lots of them of chinese-origin including this one). the story behind this term is basically an official in ancient china giving his all to his country, sacrificing his life/his heart/his everything in doing so

the term itself has evolved to most commonly apply to giving ones all for an idea or a belief. so yes, devotion is one way to put it but think like, intensity x100 

im gonna include some stuff from this thread that i think helps talk about it:

if it’s just about til the end then they could’ve used 信奉 (“believe serve”;believe in/have faith in) or 献身(”volunteer/sacrifice body”; self-sacrificing devotion/dedication) or  挺身(”give body”; offering oneself for)

if it’s just about giving your all they could’ve used 努力 (doryoku; hard work) or 奔走 (honsou; ”running about”; make effort to/hard work) or 進達 (shintasu; ”proceed arrive”; to improve/to climb) 

but the combination of these give us 尽瘁 which is exactly akaashi is. 

and no one asked but they also made some good points about bokuto’s word 日射 so i will also talk about it !!!!

日射 (nissha) =  “sun” “shoot/ray/beam“

if its just about a strong/blinding ray of light that is they could’ve used  閃光 (senkou; ”flash light”) or 光耀 (kouyou; ”light shinning”), but this implies that bokuto’s light is definitely from the sun; its not something that is gone in a flash but rather the lasting sunlight that shines on the world. unlike hinata, this isn’t about the sun itself but rather the light that comes from the sun. (it’s interesting that they didn’t use 陽光 (youkou; literally “sun light”); i think there’s a slight undertone of that being a bit softer/warmer whereas 日射 has a bit of a stronger feel to it?)

Yes I’m still thinking about this

The manga-reading fandom got very excited over this, which is totally understandable! Because it feels like Hinata’s journey has come full-circle; he meets the person who inspired him to play volleyball in the first place, and that man gives him the title he’s been fighting for for the past 338 chapters.

But what was even more striking was how Hinata barely reacted to this. He was just called the Little Giant! by the Little Giant! In a shounen manga shouldn’t the reaction be something more like…

I’m kidding, I’m kidding, I meant more like

You know what I mean? Like shouldn’t the Little Giant’s appearance be something that hypes up the upcoming game between two Little Giants?

But instead?

Obviously we’re still waiting to see what Hinata really thinks about meeting the Little Giant, but here… he’s not disappointed; he’s not awed or honored or anything; he barely seemed to register being called the Little Giant, because Hinata’s journey, like all journeys, isn’t supposed to be a circle at all but rather a continuous upward path.

Hinata isn’t meant to follow in the Little Giant’s footsteps, because the idea of the Little Giant has long since transcended the original player. In fact, Hinata’s path diverged from the original Little Giant’s a long time ago, starting from the moment he became a middle blocker instead of a wing spiker; he’s absorbed techniques and styles from other opponents (Bokuto, Ushijima, Matsukawa), he’s developed different skills than the ones he saw in the Little Giant (getting good at receiving was one of the biggest turning points in his development). He meets the Little Giant and it’s just like meeting any other volleyball player, because it’s not about him anymore, and it didn’t matter whether the Little Giant was this mysterious constantly-backlit man only shown in flashbacks or this fluffy college student who doesn’t know what a haircut is, because Hinata isn’t trying to become him anymore.

I don’t even know if I’m articulating this right, but it’s really just so cool because this reminded me of someone else I recently cried about:

Haikyuu 336, on what Bokuto said...

Ok I know that we are all freakin about about the new haikyuu chapter but can I just say that it’s not even what bokuto said but also HOW HE SAID IT I have been screaming nonstop since I read this and let me explain why…. BECAUSE... THIS IS TOO MUCH...

So here’s one of the translated scans I was reading, and while the translation isn’t incorrect it doesn’t convey the entire story:

What bokuto said was, in Japanese:

でもね赤葦 (demo ne akaashi)

俺には (ore ni wa)

120%をちょうだい (120% wo choudai)

SO LETS BREAK THIS DOWN LINE BY LINE

1. “でもね赤葦”

“But akaashi“

He could’ve said “でも” (demo) ”でもな” (demo na)　“でもさ”　(demo sa) or even ”けど” (kedo), which more or less convey “but”

BUT HE SAID でもね (demo ne)

Which is a way of speaking that’s more commonly used by women/children, and at the same time conveying a kind of “but you know“ feeling; overall this is just softer than the other ways of saying “but”

2. “俺には”

“for me”

Not “for this match,” or “for the team,” but “for me” -- I don’t know/care about other people (aka your 100% might be enough for other ppl), but FOR ME, BOKUTO KOUTAROU, SPECIFICALLY

3. “120%をちょうだい“

AND THIS IS WHERE I DIE

“Give me your 120%”

He could’ve said くれ (kure) or よこせ(yokose), which both also mean “give me”, but the way bokuto said it implies that Akaashi has to reach out and give it to him too, not just him trying to get it from Akashi. I’ve seen dictionaries say that this is closer to to “いただく” (itadaku) which is more focused on the act of receiving instead of taking, if that makes sense. On the other hand choudai is also more commonly used by women/kids, in a way that you can imagine children asking for candy or a girl acting cute and asking for something from her boyfriend (if you understand Chinese I am trying to explain 撒嬌 but there is no English word for this LOL if u r into kpop its kind of like aegyo I guess??). Basically like how he said でもね this is much softer/childlike than any other way he could’ve said it. HOWEVER even if it is softer there in undeniably an element of pressure and trust to it such that Akaashi WILL deliver this. AND UH… another context u see this commonly is in doujinshis where they ask for sex and literally say “全部/すべてちょうだい” (zenbu/subete choudai) “give me your everything“

AND THIS IS WHY JP TWITTER IS FREAKIN OUT ABOUT HOW IT LITERALLY READS LIKE A DOUJINSHI

To give more context/comparison to this, here are some examples of how other characters in haikyuu say “give me“ to each other:

Akaashi to Konoha: “kudasai” much more formal, polite, very akaashi lol

Bokuto to Konoha: “yokose” more manly, guy between guy kind of way of speech, GIMME

And perhaps the most beautiful comparison here is from chapter 286 where hinata says “give it to me next time too” with his dark!hinata face because aksjhdkjf THEY R SAYING THE SAME THING BUT THE WAY THEY SAID IT JUST REALLY REFLECTS THE DYNAMICS so he said “次もくれ” (tsugi mo kure) which is also more along the lines of guy between guy kind of speech, and slightly more demanding. I feel like I’m not doing this explanation justice but just let me say that I don’t think Kageyama or Hinata would ever ever use the word choudai towards each other because that really isn’t how their dynamic works if that makes sense??? I just love the parallel between the bokuto/akaashi relationship and kageyama/hinata relationship between setter and spiker and how both pairs feel immense pressure from each other but at the same time still such little difference in wording really shows the differences in the dynamic and im lkzjfhkljsafhkakd
