One of my favourite projects of last year was illustrating the cover of Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner for Bloomsbury. They reissued a collection of their modern classics with new illustrated covers. The whole range of books look really nice and it’s great to have been part of the project alongside some really talented illustrators. you can see the full collection HERE Â

I created this map for West Quay shopping centre in Southhampton for their Summer Shopping guide. The final version has a bit less going on that this image but I like how busy this image feels.

This year I’ve been working with Cullercoats Bike and Kayak to create some illustrations of their waterside locations. The Cullercoats Bay illustration was for sale HERE but I think it might have sold out now....

I was asked by Altrincham Unlimited to create an illustrated map of their town featuring local business, culture and leisure highlights. The map was used as a large welcome sign at the travel interchange as well as a printed guide and on hoarding within the town too. There had to be quite a high level of accuracy and detail on the map as people needed to use it to navigate but also have a bit of character and life to it. Â

So, it’s been a while since my last blog post - eight months to be exact!Â
As the photo suggests, I had a baby in the spring. But despite my lack of blog and website updates, I’ve been super busy with work since the wee one arrived.Â
I’m really lucky that my husband was keen to look after our daughter and thanks to the shared parental leave system he’s been able to have a year off work to do so. This means I’ve been able to carry on working while also spending a lot of time hanging out with my family, which has been amazing. Â
Although I was super excited about starting a family I was slightly terrified about not working for a long time as I love what I do and have spent so much time and energy building my career over the last few years. It’s not been easy getting to a point where I’m able to support myself from illustration and the thought of taking a long time off and turning down exciting jobs was really scary.Â
Thankfully, I didn’t have to do that and my situation meant I could carry on working (at least in theory!). It’s certainly been a struggle to balance the demands of work alongside breastfeeding, playing and sleeping without feeling too guilty, but I think we’re finally managing to juggle it all pretty well.Â
I don’t normally write this kind of personal post but when I was pregnant I came across a lot of people who said it was naive to think I could have a baby and carry on working. I know I would have loved reading something like this at the time that showed it was possible and that I wasn’t being naive. Don’t get me wrong - I can only do it because of shared parental leave and it has been flipping hard work, but it is possible!
Anyway, now it’s time to finally do a massive blog update with loads of new work from the last year that I’ve finally got round to sorting out!
