Wow, wish I'd known that yesterday! The Laing Art Gallery is just across the road from the city library, I would have called in. I posted a painting by Winslow Homer ages ago, 'The Fox Hunt', will add link tomorrow. I posted another of his paintings recently of a man in a boat surrounded by sharks, but deleted it in an editing session, I might re-add it later. How strange he lived in Cullercoats, I wonder what drew him there. I'm going back to Newcastle in the next couple of months so I will pop in then and view his artwork in person, and also visit Cullercoats itself.
UPDATE: OK, so I've tracked down my blog post of 2020 (here) which discusses the work of Winslow Homer. Turns out I wrote quite a bit and the piece mentions Cullercoats (but not why he, an American born in Boston, Massachusetts, ended up living in a small fishing village on the north-east coast of England for two years - I'm guessing he perhaps had ancestral roots in that region?). I've only scan-read the piece, as it may need editing and I don't want to get involved with that right now!

June 16, 1957: The packed beach at #Tynemouth Longsands, The Chronicle reported how on that sweltering weekend: “The number of people travelling by train from Newcastle to Whitley Bay was 30,000; to Tynemouth was 24,762; and to Cullercoats was 17,500” https://t.co/zhu1HDyqh9 https://t.co/rkbe5aL99J

I can be quite morbid at times, but even I thought this piece of art was a tad grim. Standing outside the entrance to Durham Clayport Library, it's hardly welcoming. But it tells an important part of Durham's history, i.e. its association with St. Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. Called 'The Journey', the sculpture refers to the story of St. Cuthbert's coffin, which was carried around by monks for several years until it found a resting place at Durham Cathedral. Will add rest of the story later.
My phone conked out halfway through the trip so I didn't get to take many photos. Durham was much a smaller city than I expected, so I spent the next day in Newcastle and Whitley Bay. I was going to walk along the coast to Cullercoats and Tynemouth, but I did my ankle in and was hobbling about in pain and had to turn back! I managed to see St. Mary's Lighthouse in the distance on the north side of the bay and hope to return to complete the trip to Tynemouth another time. Also, I was told by a woman from Hartlepool that the beaches there are wonderful, so that may be another expedition for the future.
Popped into Newcastle City Library. I don't always like modern libraries, but this one has lots of natural light. Durham's central library is quite small, but I found a book on British Folk Art which I made some notes from, e.g. about Crimean and Indian war quilts made by British soldiers. Visited the Cathedral (built by the Normans in 1092, I was informed by a friendly verger), early morning before I left, the best time to avoid the tourists and I sat in the quad part outside listening to the bells' call for service. Was lucky with the weather, turned out I'd avoided a lot of rain at home. Lots of sunshine.

City of Night Tour 2020
City of Night Tour 2020 Andy is taking his show to the road - headed out for a handful of UK dates this spring. Check out the dates and plan a road trip!
Anybody need more shows to look forward to for spring??
How about going to Birmingham??
No, no…I don’t have Duran Duran shows to announce…but Andy is going out on tour! The other day, Andy announced several dates on a solo tour during the month of May to promote his upcoming album. I don’t know how long it has been since Andy has done a solo tour, but Id venture to guess it’s been a decade…
