We spent part of a deliciously temperate afternoon at Bart’s Books in Ojai, CA. Bart's was founded by Richard Bartinsdale in 1964. It is mostly an outdoor bookstore, and some books are available for sale at all hours. Shelves of books face the street, and patrons are asked to drop coins into the door's coin box to pay for any books they take whenever the store is closed. Mostly used books are sold. I had the pleasure of finding an old art book I donated featured on display. #books #bookseller #hippiestyle #hippiegirl #hipster #ojaivibes #ojaivalley #socal

Ai WeiWei Colored Vases In the mid-1990s, Ai Weiwei took Neolithic and Han dynasty ceramics and coats them in brightly colored industrial paint, often allowing small areas to remain uncovered so that they act as windows to the historic artefact sitting below. Chinese historical artefacts are placed in direct conflict with components of enveloping modernism, and the effects of the Chinese Cultural Revolution and the difficult relationship China still holds with its past today. #ContemporaryArt #aiweiwei #artist #socialism #fineart #chineseart #artifacts

Sayama Forest Chapel The architect Hiroshi Nakamura designed the chapel to be transcendent in its existence and to blend with the surrounding forest by tilting the walls inward to avoid the existing tree branches and leaves. The roof is covered with cast-aluminum tiles with ripple-like texture, each made and shaped by hand to the building. One gable provides the entrance to the building, while the others feature floor-to-ceiling glazing, ensuring the interior is filled with natural light. Each gable is connected to the next by a curved wall. The shapes reference traditional Japanese Gassho structures, where two pillars support one another. The name of these structures refers to the shape made with the hands while in prayer. The floor is inclined towards the forest by 1 centimeter guides people towards the departed and the forward bending posture for praying. The patterns and seams of the slate extend towards the vanishing point deep into the forest to help one concentrate the mind on the forest. When one prays, a small warm space is created within the as the fingers gently join. It seems as if that small space of prayer was taken out to form the architecture. Nakamura says, “As people pray, so does the architecture. For those who are in deep grief and inconsolable, how can architecture nurture them? With this in mind, I designed buildings that gently surround them and support their intentions.” #prayer #intentionaldesign #intention #womenspower #design #architecture

Happy New Year! Please know, that if you read the news, if you have seen the effects of climate change and you have been besieged by fire and drought, floods and torrential rains or if you have been affected by the current political situation... you may be losing your health care, you may be losing something. And if you’re wealthy you may be gaining an incredible windfall. Yes, it’s been a confusing time. As we welcome 2018, deep in our hearts, we know that we are living a new reality. There is no hiding, there is no denial that is possible if you believe that each of us and our divine vibration matters. Those of us who actively choose to move forward with love in our hearts and truly know that it is up to us to bridge the past and the future and to actively assert as much positivity and knowledge of the divine as possible and to build a new reality. For this I celebrate 2018, because I know so many of you believe as I do. I love you all! Thank you for being part of my life.#newyear2018 #2018goals #happiness #love #powerful #inspiration #womenspower #divine #divinefeminine

Although Stonehenge has become an increasingly popular destination during the summer solstice, scholars have developed growing evidence that indicates prehistoric people visited the site only during the winter solstice. The only megalithic monuments in the British Isles to contain a clear, compelling solar alignment are Newgrange and Maeshowe, which both famously face the winter solstice sunrise. The latest archaeological findings add weight to growing evidence that our ancestors visited Stonehenge to celebrate the winter solstice.#wintersolstice #stonehenge #christmas #sacredgeometry #sacred

Happy Winter Solstice! The Christian celebration of Christmas is a synthesis of winter festivals from the ancient world: the Solstice, the Roman Saturnalia, the Dies Natalis of Sol Invictus, and the Jewish festival of light. Ancient Rome used the Julian calendar and the winter solstice took place on December 25. That date was important to worshippers of the sun god because it marked the" rebirth of the sun," or the day when the sun began returning to the sky for longer and longer periods each day. So December 25th became a day to recognize Sol Invictus in a ritual fashion. #wintersolstice #solinvictis #christmas #ancientrome #returnofthesun #birthdayparty

On a theme for our winter solstice, it is so crucial to our soul to bring nature into our hearts. I love this example: Thorncrown Chapel in Arkansas, nestled in a woodland setting, rises forty-eight feet into the Ozark sky. This magnificent wooden structure contains 425 windows and over 6,000 square feet of glass. It sits atop over 100 tons of native stone and colored flagstone, making it blend perfectly with its setting. The chapel's simple design and majestic beauty combine to make it what critics have called "one of the finest religious spaces of modern times." #wintersolstice #worship #chapel #nature #architecture #cathedral #power

I love the tree motif of this Chapel at the University of Edinburgh. It was restructured by studio Simpson & Brown Architects to increase capacity and improve accessibility. The project is based on the gothic cathedral on the site and the materials used and the shape of the building, chosen to communicate a sense of calm in the setting of the garden and of Meadow Walks, a street that is a popular route of the local community. Four tree-shaped columns in Corten steel sustain the curving, oak-lined timber roof, while a clay block wall covered in sandstone underlines the architectural separation between the church. The glass wall at the back of the sanctuary connects it to the garden and allows one to admire the changing seasons, an important element of any worship calendar. #worship #architecture #trees #church #calm #meditateeveryday
