A line of Dell laptops went on the market about 5 years ago that positioned its laptop webcam at the base of the screen under the log instead of at the top of the screen like most standard webcams on most laptops. This was a design flaw because this position was not only a departure from the normal top-of-screen camera but it was a great distraction for both the user and the people on the other side of the video conferencing experience. I experienced this distracting camera placement when I received a university-issued Dell laptop in 2020 and I hated the video experience.

I also am in a live-online course where one of my classmates has a bottom-of-the-screen camera. It has been the most distracting part of the class experience for me. While everyone is looking directly into their webcams at screen level, this student's camera is capturing her from below her fingers with black nail polish that looks like little spiders crawling towards the camera; like giant fingers. I've often asked why in the world would Dell's designers think that was a good idea to place the camera at keyboard level. I can imagine how distracting our classmate's webcam position was for the rest of the program participants.

Dell must have received enough feedback to warrant a change because, in a 2019 article in The Verve online magazine, Dell decided to improve upon the design of the next iteration of laptops by placing the webcam back on the top of the laptop screen.

And the world had a collective sigh of relief. No more spider fingers.

Less is more! I’ve been seeing a lot of design shifts towards more simple setups where a couple will find is a venue with clean lines or already has a lot of character and all they bring in is just something little like florals to to dress up the altar. I’m no wedding planner but I love dreaming about how they come up with their designs! A few Pro Tips from what I’ve seen: - Don’t try to cover up grand windows, fire places, stair cases, gazebos, or anything of that sort with home made pipe and drape. Sometimes that makes it look even less than with it by itself. - Only build your own altar structure if there is none, but even then — consult a pro for ways to hold it up and drape/cover it best. Sometimes if you don’t have enough material to drape your structure - don’t be afraid to throw some creative asymmetry in there — rather than forcing and odd symmetrical set up. - STOP buying those plastic runners! For one, the wind is not their friend and everything you do to hold it down will look tacky. And two - it doesn’t look good after the party steps on it! So either invest in a good one or just go with the natural setup of the venue! - Find creative ways to repurpose your ceremony florals at the reception to save in floral costs but also so you don’t have to feel like you need more or less at either setup to stay within your budget! - A simple centerpiece is enough! I think all in all - I hope you can start to see that you don’t need too just place things in your wedding just because!
