Eating Out at Boston University
I decided to compile a list of my favorite places to eat on-or-near campus, partly for my own benefit but mostly because I'm really bored right now. Here it goes:
Kenmore
I live in Myles Standish Hall, so most of the time my off-campus meals are in the Fenway/Kenmore area.
Uburger
This is my haven. I love Uburger with every fiber of my being. Located at 636 Beacon St., it's literally the closest building to Myles Standish Hall, so during the winter there are so many times I'll be walking to the Dining Hall and just change my mind and get a burger.
My favorite burger by a mile is the Boom Burger. I get the beef one but the vegetarian one is supposedly really good, too. It has jalapeños which doesn't sound appetizing at all, but I've learnt to love them. The Hot Chick sandwich, which is essentially a Caesar Salad in a sandwich, is also really great. Lastly, their Frappé is the single best one in Boston.
Fins Sushi and Grill
Fins, located beside Uburger, is a great Japanese / Sushi restaurant. I don't go there as often as I'd like because it's fairly expensive but I make it a point to go at least once or twice a month.
The Beef Fried Rice is the best fried rice I've ever had. It's not even on the menu, but ask your sever and he/she will understand. It's divine. It's a very, very large portion though — I usually have it as my entire meal, or I share it with a friend. The Sirloin Steak is fantastic as well, but pretty pricy.
Fenmore
I've recently started going to Fenmore because I found out BU students get 10% off the bill, and there are lots of promos such as College Student night where you get 50% off with a BU ID.
The appetizers are great. The Buffalo Wings are my favorite. They also have arguably the best Caesar Salad on campus. The Nachos, however, are horrible. Stay away. From the entrées, I've only had the Steak, but it's been superb both times.
The Rest
Bertucci's is a mixed bag for me. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. Either way it's an established Italian restaurant in Kenmore. It's a little pricey but check it out at least once before deciding how you like it.
Uno's is a bit of a disappointment in Boston. I love the Buffalo Wings but the pizza doesn't do it for me. It's not too expensive but it's not good enough for me to crave it. However, it's open until 1 AM most days, so sometimes I eat there just because there's nowhere else to go and I usually don't regret it.
Eastern Standard and Island Creek Oyster Bar are great but very much on the high side. Especially the latter. Go there on special occasions only. Eastern Standard has great desserts though and is also open until 1 AM daily.
Breugger's has great bagels but I'm not a breakfast person so I've only been there once. If you're an early riser, check it out. They're incredible. I haven't been to Thai Dish because I've heard Noodle St. is a lot better but you should try both yourself before reaching that conclusion. I will soon.
Boston Beer Work is a little further down Fenway but they have great burgers and, of course, beer.
And then we have the mainstays in the area: McDonalds, Qdoba, Popeyes, and a couple of Starbucks locations.
Campus
There are a few other places on campus that I eat at frequently.
Noodle St.
Noodle St. is an award-winning Thai restaurant on Commonwealth Avenue. It's not too expensive and has great spicy, authentic Thai food. The Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles are my favorites. Their Fried Chicken is pretty good, too.
Campus Trolley
This cash-only food truck located just before CAS is a staple of Boston University. Run by Nadim Kiwan and his wife Diana since 1988, it's the only place on-campus to get Lebanese food. You have to try out the Greek Chicken sandwich at least once. It's so, so good.
The Rest
Cane's and Sunshine Café are very popular in West Campus but (to my own high surprise) I still haven't been to either. There's also a Panera Bread in West that I frequent. The Broccoli Cheddar Bread Bowl is out of this world, and their desserts are incredible.
Off-Campus
In a city as popular as Boston, there are obviously a ton of places to eat off-campus. Here are a few of my favorites.
Shake Shack
This list would be grossly incomplete without the inclusion of Shake Shack, the only burger place to stand toe-to-toe with my beloved Uburger. Located in Chestnut Hill, it's a hassle getting there regardless of whether you take the T, the bus, or an Uber, but it's always worth the trip.
There are no words to describe how good the Shack Burger is. It's not that big so get a double though. The Vanilla Shake is another must-have.
I usually go to Shake Shack for dinner and I have to starve myself the rest of the day to compensate for the meal, but it's totally worth it. It's also not expensive at all, though it costs more than Uburger and you obviously have to factor in the cost of getting there.
Legal Seafood
Located in the Prudential Center, I visit Legal Seafood at least once a month. It's expensive, but you absolutely need good seafood once in a while, and Legal doesn't disappoint. Except for if you order anything that isn't seafood.
Their steaks and salads are terrible. I have no idea why they even offer them. But the Clam Chowder soup and their Salmon is exquisite.
Cheesecake Factory
Cheesecake Factory, also located in The Pru, is expensive but there's nothing bad on the menu. Nothing.
I usually go for the Steak Diane or the Filet Mignon, but their Buffalo Wings and Shepherd's Pie are also really good.
I used to go here a lot more often last year but finances have restricted me. I've also found places that taste almost as good at a fraction of the price, so I don't usually crave it, but for occasions such as birthdays I make it a point to go. Be sure to book an appointment because walk-in wait times are usually north of an hour.

'Friends' is coming to Netflix
They will all be there for you, Jan.1, 2015 https://t.co/EdGNWtFsZl
— Netflix US (@netflix)
October 15, 2014
According to the above tweet from Netflix and an announcement at a recent Time Warner investor event, every episode of Friends is coming to Netflix. This is horrible news. I couldn't be more excited.
I used to watch Friends all day every day in Ghana. Not actively — it would be on in the background while I talked to friends and/or pretended to do homework — but it was always on. I've seen every episode multiple times. I know every line of every scene. My obsession is unhealthy.
That's why when I left Ghana, I didn't bring the hard drive that has my collection of Friends with me. I figured I could do with one less distraction. Alas, fate has decided that I must not be productive, so it looks like I'll going to be binge-watching Netflix throughout the Spring 2015 semester. You're all welcome to join me.
Every episode of 'Friends' will be made available on Netflix in the USA and Canada starting January 1, 2015.

301
I’ve had a lot of fun restarting Shining Paradigm recently but I’ve been feeling a little limited there given that I can only talk about technology.
This site, 301, is more for me than you. It’s a place for me to collect the essays I write (assigned or otherwise), a place to argue things outside the scope of technology, and generally just a place for me to leave my footprint.
I don’t see myself posting here as often as I do at Shining Paradigm, but who knows? We’ll see how it goes, I guess.
