Fashion 241 covered a wide range of topics and concepts, but one of the most surprising concepts that I learned this semester was the concept of the negative effects of counterfeit and bootleg. I realized that bootleg doesn’t always equal counterfeit and vice versa. Throughout my teen years I would see counterfeit goods but I was never bothered because I felt that if I wasn’t buying what was the big deal, this course taught me that it is a big deal because people lose millions of dollars as a result of the counterfeit industry. Bootleg isn’t great either, having cases go “missing” from trucks can cause problems for the receiver who may have been waiting on a specific amount of items. FASH241 has really opened my eyes to the harmful effects that come from counterfeiting and I hope that going forward I can discourage my family and friends from purchasing counterfeit items. In addition to the concepts of counterfeit and bootlegging I was also surprised to see where certain companies/careers fell in accordance to the 4 levels of fashion. Previously I didn’t pay attention to the importance of the primary, secondary, and retail levels due to the fact that I didn’t know how much they encompassed. I really enjoyed researching all the auxiliary level companies and careers because I know that is the segment of the industry that I am most interested in, but now I have the necessary background knowledge of the other three segments to succeed in the Auxiliary level. FASH 241 was great at exposing me to new careers that aren’t commonly discussed in conversation about the fashion industry as well as educating me on the terms and concepts that will be imperative to my success in the field. I am excited for the upcoming courses that will continue to build my skill level and prepare me for a career after graduation. It’s been fun!
