your reader will never be able to visualize the exact image you have in your head no matter how thorough your sentences are. instead of laboring for paragraphs, pick the most important details and move on.

Gotta love no-name stories
Whenever I write a short story, it rarely gets a proper title until I actually finish it...
But the main ones I just tend to name "Project [insert relevant stuff here]" if I don't have a better idea at the start
So far I've had Project Amulet, Project Victory and Project Relic, with a few more ideas on the horizon
“what’s the title of ur book?” untitled (4)
#I'm also sometimes hilariously bad at making proper titles#I've had some proper laughs at some past drafts I found in my notes#Project Amulet#Project Victory#Project Relic#writing#writeblr#writer problems#writing humor#writers on tumblr#writing community#writer life#creative writing#writer things#writerblr#writer thoughts

when you write “he nodded” for the 27th time in one chapter, and now you’re questioning if humans even nod that much or if your characters are just emotionally repressed bobbleheads.

your main character doesn’t have to be likable. they just have to be someone people would read fanfiction about.

every murder mystery ever: “the killer left no clues!” except for the insanely obvious ones the detective magically notices after 300 pages.
#this is exactly why I do an outline for mystery novels#then end up forgetting thise clues myself...#but at least I can say I did write them in#writing#writeblr#writer problems#writing humor#writers on tumblr#writing memes#writing community#writing struggles#writer life#creative writing#writer things#writing motivation#writer memes#writerblr#writer thoughts#original writing

Everytime I finish a chapter, one of two things will happen:
1. I continue writing like hell, and come out at the end with more material than I could ever need (the next step is editing hell)
2. I go blank immediately, and lose my motivation to write anything for a month (the next step here is procrastination)
#right now it's number 2#I finally finished that chapter I've been at for a month#and now there's now way forward#writeblr#writing#writers on tumblr#writer things#writerblr#writer#writer problems#writers#original writing#writing memes

Be brief.
Ideal length for a generic work of fiction for a novice author is less than 100K.
Closer to 75K.
Ok, I'm going to go on a small rant. Fanfiction is frequently WAY LONG *in comparison to published works*. I enjoy reading long fics. And yes, I know I'm writing the longest and most epic series ever. But before I began the project I set a cap of 200K per installment. And past the first six installments (which each encompass a full year at Hogwarts), my word limit per POV installment dropped to less than 100K.
If you are writing very long fanfiction, that is awesome. I am too. Some people don't want to read that many words and we, as creators, must accept that.
BUT if you are going to write a self generated novel which you intend to offer to agents to be published, you need to practice brevity.
And if this is a skill you want to hone, you can work on it in the fanfic realm! You will probably attract more readers if you have a finished work sitting between 60-70K. And good night, this should be a relief to us authors. It is to me!

Can confirm, rooftops add at least +15% dramatic flair - that can only be good for a story.
if there’s no dramatic rooftop scene, is it even a good story?

i gave my character a tragic backstory, and now they won’t stop crying about it. grow up.
#oc: aurora lockwood#yup#she just can't shut up about her dad#but it's not really his fault tbh#he's a bit too dead to respond#and she's at least got someone to cry to#but she still chooses the author over her best friend...#writing#writeblr#writer problems#writing humor#writers on tumblr#writing memes#writing community#writing struggles#writer life#creative writing#writer things#writing motivation#writer memes#writerblr#writing funny#writer thoughts#writer struggles#original writing
