your main character doesn’t have to be likable. they just have to be someone people would read fanfiction about.

every murder mystery ever: “the killer left no clues!” except for the insanely obvious ones the detective magically notices after 300 pages.

Everytime I finish a chapter, one of two things will happen:
1. I continue writing like hell, and come out at the end with more material than I could ever need (the next step is editing hell)
2. I go blank immediately, and lose my motivation to write anything for a month (the next step here is procrastination)

Be brief.
Ideal length for a generic work of fiction for a novice author is less than 100K.
Closer to 75K.
Ok, I'm going to go on a small rant. Fanfiction is frequently WAY LONG *in comparison to published works*. I enjoy reading long fics. And yes, I know I'm writing the longest and most epic series ever. But before I began the project I set a cap of 200K per installment. And past the first six installments (which each encompass a full year at Hogwarts), my word limit per POV installment dropped to less than 100K.
If you are writing very long fanfiction, that is awesome. I am too. Some people don't want to read that many words and we, as creators, must accept that.
BUT if you are going to write a self generated novel which you intend to offer to agents to be published, you need to practice brevity.
And if this is a skill you want to hone, you can work on it in the fanfic realm! You will probably attract more readers if you have a finished work sitting between 60-70K. And good night, this should be a relief to us authors. It is to me!

Can confirm, rooftops add at least +15% dramatic flair - that can only be good for a story.
if there’s no dramatic rooftop scene, is it even a good story?

the first rule of writing is that there are no rules. the second rule is to save your work every 5 minutes because technology is a fickle god.

the real plot twist is when a side character becomes the main character and i have no control over it.

Me, to my OC: You're my favourite person in the world and I love you from the bottom of my heart.
My OC: Then why do you make me go through hell twice a day?
Me: ...
My OC: ...
Me: Anyway, back to it. Off you go, to the dungeon of angst!
My OC: -.-

Why is it harder to write a summary for the story, than writing the story itself?
