I know my sister like I know my own mind You will never find anyone as trusting or as kind If I tell her that I love him she’d be silently resigned He’d be mine She would say I’m fine She’d be lying

Last weekend Urban Aphrodite performed a two-show run of BENT, which was part of ShanghaiPRIDE week. It was a combination of songs from the musical RENT mixed with monologues taken from interviews with the LGBTQ community in Shanghai. I was honored to be part of the wonderful cast, and to sing for the benefit of such a great cause. Especially in light of this week's Supreme Court ruling! Cheers.

Day 1 2015.05.01 Friday Shanghai to Venice
This morning I woke up at 6:15 am to begin my Mediterranean adventure! I will be reuniting with several of my delightful Stanford Taiko friends from college. I took the metro to Pudong Airport, where I boarded my first ever Air France flight, flew eleven hours to a stopover in Paris, then a connecting flight to Venice. I found the seats comfortable, the food quite edible (rare for me with airplane food), and the crew to be predominantly male, which was different.
Upon arriving in Venice, I took the ATVO bus, which leaves every 20 minutes from the airport to Piazzale Roma in the main part of Venice, which is an island. I had a mis-start looking for the street Lista di Spagna, but returned to the square, purchased some stracciatella gelato, and asked the vendor for directions. The sun was setting, and those of you who read my New Delhi blog post know how wandering at night turned out for me last time, but I suppressed the nerves and kept moving.
I crossed the big modern bridge she pointed out, then proceeded to get quite confused by the street signage. I was walking along Strada Nuova for ages without seeing a single sign that said so! Thank goodness I had downloaded a map on TripAdvisor and was prepared to get lost in Venice. I just went with the flow and enjoyed the picturesque streets of this city at dusk.
At one point I did stop to ask a couple waiters how to find Strada Nuova and was met with very curt hand waves or responses of “I don’t know.” I guess they get bombarded by lost tourists every day. But you’d think they could have at least said, “You’re on it,” which I confirmed after studying the map! Sigh.
I followed my Airbnb host’s instructions to the right landmark, and then I got lost wandering the narrow alleyways behind it because there are apparently two calles by the same name very close to each other. Finally I found the apartment after scanning all the address number plates in the area.
I checked in with the host, dropped off my stuff in her attic room, went to a nearby place for a sit-down meal of penne arrabiata (yum!), and returned to the apartment for a shower and a couple hours of transcribing “Whatever Lola Wants” into Musescore in preparation for an upcoming singing gig when I return to Shanghai. I have quite a few extracurricular tasks to take care of while on this trip!

there’s something really interesting in this passage that I wanted to point out Trelawney assumes that Harry was born in midwinter because of his “dark hair” and “mean stature” and “tragic losses so young in life” Tom Riddle was born in midwinter, is describe in CoS as resembling Harry, and his mother died right after his birth Harry has a piece of Voldemort’s soul in him that’s why Trelawney made that assumption
