                milena twirled the paper straw in her iced coffee as she waited in a back corner of the cafe nervously for jules’ arrival, quietly thinking through for the millionth time what she was going to say. after years of avoiding him, she was tired of keeping a good friend at an arm’s distance. especially now being on the receiving end of someone pushing her away despite her best efforts, her guilt had finally led to her reaching out to ask the male to grab coffee. with a baseball cap pulled down on her head, she looked up at the sound of the bell on the door indicating someone’s arrival. the brunette lifted her arm to help jules locate her tucked away from the rest of the customers. “hey,” she said with a tentative smile as he approached the small table for two, unsure of how to act around him anymore. “thanks for coming. did you want anything?”

          the moment he stepped into the cafe and glanced around, jules recognized that it wasn’t somewhere he would go if he hadn’t agreed to meet someone. milena. it felt so surreal to be searching the crowded room for her familiar face that his dark gaze widened when he spotted her. he realized there was some part of him that expected to be stood up. after years of unanswered text messages and phone calls and blocked attempts to reach out, it didn’t sound so outlandish or unlikely to him. jules nodded in greeting as he approached the table where she was seated. “hey,” he returned, sliding into the chair across from her. “uh...” he looked over at the counter, where a line had formed while several baristas scurried around preparing all kinds of drinks that he’s never had. “...no thanks. i don’t drink coffee.” he can’t remember if it’s something that milena ever knew about him.
