A bit since I last wrote anything, life happens it seems. In any case winter is about to arrive as I write and the forests are depressing to see in this period after shedding their leaves and before they are hopefully covered with snow.
So I am currently in a Death Metal mood, it fits with the ambiance so to say. Walking in the resting forest listening to Terracite by Cattle decapitation makes me calm for some reason.
I have tried a new method for walking were I do not listen to any media and try to focus. Not sure if it works but it felt good to be able to take photos. The experiment will continue.

Finishing up with the subfloors after nine days of hard-work. It feels beyond amazing to have gotten to the first big milestone. Next up is the roof that we are going to try and renovate. For some reason they had covrered up Pärlspont with flat wooden boards painted white...
In the picture is the soon too be kitchen with the new loadbearing wall on the left. On the other side will be a guestroom. But for this summer we are done. Just need to finish up and then start the next project of getting a old car running again. It should not be to hard but we will see. I am in uncharted waters and trying to be self-sufficient is not easy.

So it has been some days of grueling work for me and my father but we are getting closer to finishing up the floors now.
This is the progress from yesterday, we are actually on the last row in the kitchen part but we ran out of floor boards and thus we had to break of for the day.
It is interesting work and I do learn a lot from my father. It is amazing to see experience and knowledge be applied and I am truly greatful for my father.
Yesterday we also had a really beautiful sky, shining golden from the sunset a small raincloud created a truly breathtaking view. Due to the rain you could also glance the rainbow amongst and abouve the treetops.
In the end being in a cabin far(ish) from other people is quiet amazing. Standing outside you are greated by birds and the sound of the wind rusteling the trees.
As promised before I am continouing the journey towards floors. I will soon return with my journey in switching out my beloved CentOS as my daily driver which will be a harsh move for me.

So a bit later then expected but this will be a smal update on the project progress. We have just finished laying the subfloor framework and finished modt of the insulation.
This was a early progress picture when we had finished sbout a third of the floorjoists. Progress was very fast when putting those up but in the smaller parts progress got very slow.
When we finished the framing the next step was to add treated boards to hold up the insulation. We also had to add a loadbearing wall, there was one before. Or at least there was a wall built with doubled up planks (90mm) at least and the assumption was that they were load bearing.
After adding the wall we started with adding boards and insulation. Which is really unpleasant work, it is to warm to have full covers on when working with it but then you get many tiny scratches. We still use proper masks gloves and glases.
Some work is a bit more engaged since the cabin is old and most of the items are uneaven.
A closeup of the waterpump and boards underneath. You can also see the new wood added to the wall to the right. It is shimmied up and will settle more over time. I will look at it again when switching the outer walls.

So it might be time for some introductions. I am a Linux user since many years and I has used CentOS as a daily driver since version 5. I have tried other distros but CentOS stuck with me for some reason. Currently I am using Fedora to get a later version of Gnome then what stream provides.
Since buying Redhat IBM has shutdown both CentOS as a bug-by-bug copy of RHEL but they have now attempted to further shutdown the likes of Oracle-linux, Almalinux and Rockylinux. This is a dick move, but I do not generally care that much about the fallout of this, many others have done a great job of analyzing and summarizing what it might entail.
I for one though feel like this is it and now I need to convert to running Debian. Due to the sheer amount of work it feels rough but it is better to rip of that band-aid quckly.
So after nearly a decade of being all CentOS I am converting over because I cannot trust that IBM does not do further harm to how they distribute CentOS and Fedora. The only viable alternative is to use a distro that is actually free. Debian is the best one for the task and I will document my efforts here as I go along.
In other news; I have a couple of projects going on at the cabin, one is the floors in the kitchen/guestroom. The other is to get our old car going again. It might be amusing to see me flounder around attempting to do things that are so far outside of my comfort-zone.
As a last thing I must say that I am starting to lean towards owning hard copies of things again. There are things getting yanked away and the battle-of-the-streamingservices are creating casualties. It feels weird that for instance Final space is never going to be available again when it is removed from Netflix. Since you cannot buy that on hard-copy it will soon be lost. Sad since it was a story that I would have loved to see conclude.

There is something special with taking a walk early in the morning. Even more so when the skies are boiling and the rain is hanging in the air.
The weather has been warm for a bit to long and even the groundwater has recinded down threatening the watersupply of anyone with a older well.
But the last week the weather changed and the rains returned some water to the parched forests and fields, the farmers rejoiced.
This is the best therapy for me. Going from a stressful workplace in Stockholm, to the relative calm in the countryside.
For the small ones it is a time for new experiences, having a private swingset is commonplace here. But the joy persists when you can go there whenever you feel like it.
The only sad part is that the forests are being clear-cut in this area leaving large scares of empty land inbetween the different types of tree "farms". Since there is few forests around here that is not actually planted. We are somewhat lucky since our house is sorrounded by a old forest that is not worth taking care of.
