Favorite Indie Animated Series/Pilots: The Gaslight District
The second entry here is for one that just came out. A big one for me since I knew about this years ago, back when I still thought it was gonna be 2D so this was kinda special to see premiere.
More amazing animation from Glitch Productions that I have to admire, with all their series feeling completely different. TGD has such a fun style, looking gross, creepy, and kind of janky like old school videogame cutscenes at times (in the best way).
Had to animate Mel next to Pomni, keeping the Glitch girls close. Got way more than expected in the pilot and excited for more.

Favorite Animated Short Films: Diamond Jack
Just the animation, the music, everything about this is perfect to me. I even noticed a bunch of things I unconsciously stole from these 3 minutes like that star wink they do here. A great example about what people can do with animation.
(I also put in references to their other film that doesn't get as much attention with the burger: Burger Boss)
Even more fun is seeing what Rachel Kim is up to, having worked on a BUNCH of other things I love (Kid Cosmic, The Cuphead Show, Fionna & Cake, etc.).
Any short films you love the same way that you wanna rec?

I'll also be doing a digital animated collage for my favorite animated short films, just going through the ones I've saved on my Youtube playlist, the ones I grew up with and the ones I'm finding only now. (My Watch Later is like 80% animated short films.)
Starting with the one that has a special place in my heart.

The first to do was obvious with how much it's blown up: The Amazing Digital Circus.
I don't love it as much as everyone does but a great series so far with lots of creatives working on it that I like, and I can love it solely for how it brought indie animation to people's attention. Plus, it seemed appropriate to draw Pomni alone in a void, scared out of her mind.
Can't wait to see how this looks a few months from now. (Should I do this with the things I watch/read too? A digital scrapbook of my favorites in a year??)

Favorite Indie Animated Series/Pilots: The Amazing Digital Circus
With me working on stuff that'll take a long time to finish (nothing new there), I decided to post a little collage of some favorite indie animated pilots and series to remind me of creative works done by plenty of talented people as inspiration. This includes indie series and pilots that couldn't make it past that first episode (they deserve the attention too).

Turnip Head as Nausicaä (Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind)
More of Turnip Head (Howl's Moving Castle) as other Studio Ghibli characters that I did last year.
I'm gonna try doing at least one of these over time for every Ghibli film, just cause it's a fun excuse to draw Turnip Head more and to remember these movies.
I watched this right before The Boy and The Heron came out and was so surprised at how good this was as the first unofficial Ghibli film, with themes of war and pollution that you can see in so many of their future works.

A collection of my past Ghibli-related works.
With the recent AI Ghibli art trend, I just wanted to say how much Studio Ghibli has inspired me in my past art and that I will keep making art inspired by them.
I've never used AI for art before (even though there was a lot of AI Ghibli art online years ago too. I KNOW since I always commented whenever I noticed it was AI) and I won't use it now nor any time in the future.

I've listened to so much Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend that I had to make something with it. I picked a surprisingly inspiring clip that I wanted to animate but didn't have time to do it fully close enough to the Oscars (with Conan hosting). So I just decided to do an animatic. I think I'm gonna focus on storyboarding this year along with short animations and then fully animate the ones that get the most attention or I had the most fun making.

Some details from other Larry Alcala works that I drew inspiration from or just really liked (check out his work!)
Tumblr media
A modern Larry Alcala tribute.
I loved learning about Larry Alcala (Filipino artist who made illustrations kinda like Where's Waldo?) so I tried replicating his style and did one on a fairly new kind of event that's getting more popular year by year: Conventions.
I hid some mascots for local comic conventions, other things you can see to look out for on the Missing posters on the bottom, and just things you'd find at cons in general.

Finally doing one of these, along with the new pfp, and I already can't wait for next year to change it.
Struggling between wanting people to see my art and the desire to stay a mysterious secluded art hermit.

New profile pic for the year! Came out spookier than I intended it to be but that's fine.
