The aircraft was adapted from the DC-3 commercial airliner that appeared in 1936. The first C-47S were ordered in 1940 and by the end of World Word II, The United States had produced 9,348 for Army Air Force use. They carried personal and cargo, and in a combat role, towed troop-carrying gliders and dropped paratroopers into enemy territory. After the war, many C-47S remained in Air Force service, participating in the Berlin Airlift and other peacetime activities. During the Korean Conflict, C-47S hauled supplies, dropped paratroopers, evacuated wounded and dropped flares for night bombing attacks. In Vietnam the C-47 served again as a transport, but it was also used in a variety of other ways including flying ground attack (Gunship), reconnaissance and physiological warfare missions. The design showed promise and Army Air Forces purchases of Allison-Powered Mustangs began in 1941 primarily for photo reconnaissance and ground support use due to its limited high-attitude performance. Bu in 1942, test of P-51S using the British Rolls-Royce “Merlin” Engine revealed much improved speed and service ceiling, and in December 1943, Merlin-Powered P-51B first entered combat over Europe. Providing High-attitude escort to B-17S and B-24S, they scored heavily over German interceptors and by war’s end, P-51S had destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft in the air, more than any other fighter in Europe. Mustangs served in nearly every combat zone, including the Pacific where they escorted B-29S to Japan from Iwo Jima. Between 1941 and 1945, the AAF ordered 14,855 Mustangs (Including A-36A Dive-Bomber and F-6 Photoreconnaissance versions), of which 7,956 were P-51D. During the Korean War, P-51D’S were used primarily for close support of ground forces until withdrawn from combat in 1953. This P-51H has the colors and markings of a P-51D flown by LT. COL. John C. This twin turbofan attack aircraft carries up to 16,000 pounds (7,257 KG) of external payload, plus an internally mounted 30MM rapid-fire #cannon with high velocity ammunition capable of penetrating the latest tanks and heavily armored vehicles. It is able to fly and maneuver at very low altitudes. It must be able to survive intense antiaircraft fire, surface-to-air missiles and attacks by other aircrafts. The A-10 mission is close air support under 1000-foot overcast with two nautical miles visibility. There is no other airplane in the Air Force inventory that can do it. In operation Desert Storm the A-10S flew 8,100 sorties, with a mission capable rate of 95.7 percent; they launched ninety percent of the #Maverick #Missiles used and achieved the only two air-to-air gun kills in the war. Production delivery began in August 1943, and on Nov 19, 1944 it went into combact over Europe. It was used for level bombing, ground strafing and rocket attacks. By the time production halted after VJ-Day, 2502 invaders had been built. The A-26 was redesigned the B-26 in 1948. During the Korean conflict, the airplane entered combact once again, this time as a night intruder to harass North Korean supply lines. During the early days of Vietnam, the invader went into action for a third time. Also, the Air Force ordered 40 B-26B'S with more powerful engines and increased structural strength. The B-17 prototype first flew on July 28, 1935. Few B-17S were in service on December 7, 1941, but production quickly accelerated. This B-17G represents "Heavens Above" of the 561st squadron, 388th bombardment group, 8th air force European-African-Middle Eastern theater. The groups first combat mission was July 17, 1943, against Amsterdam, Netherlands, and last combat mission, April 21, 1945. "Heavens Above" flew 128 combat missions.
