Chloe: It'll be so much fun! The Christmas festival was great so this one will be even better since it'll be nicer outside. Hell yes I can! I get waaay too competitive at those games. Promise not to kill me? I went on my first run in a few weeks yesterday and I feel so out of shape.

“Um, I probably will. I don’t think I’ve ever played laser tag in my life. If I’m on your team then you’ll be doing all the work,” she told him. “Okay life coach. I know how to control myself when I need to, thank you very much. I go hiking because you like it. That’s a pretty big one.”

“Well how about I put you on my back and carry you around? Would that make it easier?” He laughed and smiled at her words. “You did go hiking with me. That was like ultimate friendship level shit. Don’t worry, we’re still getting matching crop tops, we’re going to be alright.” He nudged her a bit and laughed softly. “Nah but really, we’re going to laser tag. You’re gonna have fun and I’ll buy you a drink after, I’ll just sit on the other end of the bar,” he joked.

“Oh shut up” She pushed his head away gently just like she always would when things got cheesy and emotional. “We don’t need to relive my 18th birthday again now, do we? I don’t think I can get the idea of you in an annoying high pitch voice out of my head.” She used her arms to rest her head meeting his eyes with a smile to his touch. The constant feeling of still being in high school and still having that chance to get out of Rockford was always present around him. “I guess I can tolerate you without a good red. But I am proud of you, I know it wasn’t easy and I’m glad it didn’t get worse before it started getting better.” The last thing she wanted was Jesse to become like her dad, an alcoholic with no way out of it. 

“Your 18th birthday was great and I won’t hear any other complaints.” He laughed softly before smiling. He felt himself blush at her words and dipped his head with a shrug. “Well you know, I try, I try.” He moved closer to her before sliding his arm around her waist, his fingers brushing against her back. “Yeah well I had to do something, right? Couldn’t let myself go, who else would buy you cookie dough ice cream when you’re upset? You know Reagan always eats it all so she doesn’t count.”

Avery thought as he spoke. “Let’s go get ice cream and then go play laser tag and then go see Power Rangers!” Her face lit up as the plans racked her brain. It was so nice seeing Jesse better. He had come a long way since the drunken man she met wanting pancakes.

“That sounds like one hell of a plan and I am 100% down. I just gotta make sure we have a good crew for it but how about we go do ice cream and power rangers just us? We can get one of those huge tubs of popcorn.”

“You know, you need to pick your head up from time to time because your neighbor down the hall is fine as hell. How could you not me tell me that you lived near a tall, dark and handsome firefighter? I mean the guy is built. I would climb that shit like a tree.” Jesse laughed as he walked into Donovan’s apartment and held up the bag of food he brought with him. “Anyway, I hope you’re hungry because I ordered way too many sides.”

The brunette couldn’t help but giggle as he lifted her from the floor the slightest bit, shaking her head immediately as he put her down again. “Why thank you, you’re looking good too so shut up, okay?” She fixed her hair while she grinned enthusiastically at her old friend, not really believing her eyes, she would’ve thought him to be in Chicago at the very least. “Tequila is the only reason for which I wear big handbags, if you know what I mean.” Addison winked, following it with a small shrug of her shoulders. “I need to prove myself I can’t make it on my own, that my name’s not the one reason I’m successful at my job. I know it’s silly but Rockford seemed nice enough, not a dump but also not a huge city where everyone knows who I am. The real question is, what are you doing here?”

“What? Why? I can’t tell you that you’re looking fine as hell? I mean someone has to let you know.” He smiled and took her hands for a moment as he looked at her. “I don’t know if you want to admit to an alcoholic that you hide tequila in your purse but I’ll let that one slip, don’t worry. So you’re here for a fresh start then? That’s not too uncommon around her and this place is pretty great, I won’t lie. Me? This is my home, babygirl. Born and raised. I came back home for a lot of reasons, mainly to be near my family but yeah, lots to catch you up on, I guess. You free right now? We can get something to eat or coffee or something.”

“If we’re doing lasertag, I’m uninviting Mia. The last time we went, she beat me terribly and still hasn’t let me forget it,” she mused, chuckling as she shook her head. “Bowling’s another good option though.”

Jesse let out a laugh as he looked at her. “Oh no you’re both coming and how about I put you on the same team and call it a day? That way you can work together. It is a good option but Laser tag is so much more physical and interactive and everyone can play at the same time. Plus people want to drink more when they bowl, laser tag will keep people busy and not make them hate me for not letting them drink.”

"Well we never had any pets but I’m sure we can make it work. Is it? I think you’re 100% up to it if you ask me. Well we’re going to make you into one and it’s going to be amazing. Jesse laughed and shook his head. “You talk a big game, Winters, you better be able to back it up. Tell you brother too if he wants to come. Something tells me he would be all too down for some laser tag. It’s going to be the biggest game they’ve ever seen. I’m thinking of making a trophy and everything, who doesn’t love a trophy?”

Do me a favor, if I ever say to you that I’m too old to do laser tag or anything like that, please slap me in the face. You have full permission.” He smiled shyly at her words and nodded. “Thanks, Lil, really, it means a lot. I’m trying my best so I’m just glad it’s paying off.”
