Azores Glider... by Jay Stainton Via Flickr: I took this picture yesterday of Air Transat Airbus A330-200 (C-GITS). On this day (August 24) nineteen years ago this aircraft earned the nickname: ‘Azores Glider’ after both engines flamed out due to fuel starvation over the Atlantic Ocean. The aircraft flew for some 120km (75 miles) as a glider and landed safely in the Azores. All 306 passengers and crew survived. The irony of the situation lay in the fact that the captain was an experienced glider pilot. She is seen here in storage at Transat’s Toronto maintenance hangars in Canada.
