OMG TYYYYY!! I really like talking abt chem and my long-term goal is to be a professor sjdks, buttttt while I work on my undergrad, thesis, and then masters/doctorate, I've just been doing some tutoring here or there :D
I think ppl grow to hate chem from bad teacher experiences, I think it's sooo cool how it entangles into other sciences and what not :333
But for a bit of context of above, my classes have only handled fire for experiments (and a demonstration one time) (BARIUM BURNS GREEN, ICONIC).
During high school I had an AICE class (similar to AP), where we had a qualitative analysis of combining chemicals with certain stuff, looking at color change/if a solid forms, and determining the compounds from there.
One test was determining the presence of carbonate!! I think it was based on adding (dilute) ammonia and aluminum foil, burning it, and holding a certain type of paper (blue or red litmus I believe?) to see if the color change occurred.
And now for my regular lab classes, I once had a lab (GAHHHH I FORGET THE KIND IT'S CALLED) based on burning the substance, reading wavelength, and determining stuff abt outermost electrons :D
Buttttt the lab I work in doesn't have fire at all, tbh I prefer it like that. I hate leaving open flames and Bunsen burners feel relatively imprecise
In case you're curious, I work moreso within biochemistry, stuff with opioids :D
It's hard to summarize since I'm still a bit new to biochem/the specific area we're researching, but part of it is making peptides (protein building blocks) that interact with certain opioid receptors in a certain way to encourage pain-relief but not respiratory depression, high addiction rates, etc.
It's definitely cool!! I'll start working on it in person this month, but for the past while, it's been just reading research papers and getting background knowledge
ALRIGHT EVERYONE!!!
As your manager,I hope you all are working hard!! Any asks or concerns my employees?

OOC: I really love when ppl talk abt vv dangerous science and it's like "wear protection" bc almost no matter what, YOU'RE COOKED /a
For context, I'm a chem major, I work in a lab. Whenever we use chemicals, we wear gloves. Whenever we use fire and chemicals,,,, we don't wear gloves.
I think fire protection is a nice idea in theory but u gotta be so- exact with it??? I had to do trainings on the different types of fire extinguishers for different fires and how lab coats can be good, but only if they aren't made of certain materials bc they'll burn right onto your skin.
Also, your glass can explode if it was damaged ahead of time (even really tiny cracks) (yup, it can hold liquid and have a tiny crack)
But anyway, yeah, burning ice should result in relatively the same thing as burning water! Going from solid to liquid, liquid to gas, or solid to gas generally involves breaking bonds. These bonds have energy inside.
Putting water/ice in a burning hot substance causes bonds to break SO quickly that it has to get rid of a bunch of the energy! Typically, water would go to make other bonds since hydrogen is slightly positive and oxygen is slightly negative (aka generally flexible for other charged molecules). But unfortunately, since oil is pretty nonpolar and nonsoluble, they won't combine, so the water has to leave very quickly, and boom!! Explosion!!
I would find actual numbers for comparison of life stuff (like comparing it to microwaves or the sun), but it's a bit difficult to find the enthalpy (heat energy) values for water in deep fryers...
(Partial guess being deep fryers can vary in kind of oil used, and thus, temperatures used. My other guess is I looked at one 2009 research article, deemed it useless, and decided that it's 4:30 am and I don't care enough.)
I think it'd be realistic to do math if we looked at:
1.) Enthalpy of ice (solid water)
2.) Enthalpy of hydrogen gas
3.) Enthalpy of oxygen gas
4.) Enthalpy of water vapor
5.) Enthalpy regarding sublimation of H2O (solid to gas) (avoiding saying water bc we're not talking about liquid form)
6.) Quantities of all of the above
7.) Consider the short-time span
And you should have some kind of value for energy release! Tbh, wouldn't be too bad to calculate if we were using STP, standard pressure and temperature. Water has clearly defined values for what science considers the Normal Environment, but I have no idea how to change the numbers to be appropriate for several hundred Celsius lmao
But nah, instead we would probably use boring physics to measure wavelength and get force and blah blah blah. I hated every year of that class, despite having frequent crossover with chem
But anyway, I support these scientific adventures as long as you minimize risk, measure/record properly, and get us some more data!
^^ not Jax, still ooc, I just recognize that some ppl wanna skim (Jax is purple whenever I do him :3)
