Sorry to bother you...

After lurking for years I wrote some Robron fanfic for the first time and for some strange reason I thought others might like to read it?? I dunno

Based on this tweet from a way more talented person than me

Title: The Lake

Characters: Husband era!Robert and Aaron

Summary: The car crash had a longer lasting impact on Aaron and Robert than either of them realised.

Rating: PG

Warnings: References to a car accident/SSW/drowning, mild-PTSD, near-death experience

Notes:This is from Roberts POV. I might do one an Aaron POV one depending on how not-shit this one is. All feedback appreciated!

If I died here, Robert thought to himself, I wouldn’t be against it.

He was floating on his front in the pleasantly cool water of the lake, surrounded by hills as far as the eye could see. Aaron was a few meters away doing forward rolls in the water.

Everything beneath the glasslike surface was clear as day - Robert was glad he had brought his goggles in the end. It was beautiful.

Robert counted, trying to see how long he could hold his breath. Surprisingly he had managed to get to 37 seconds, but knew he could do better. He had to do better. Who knew when such a thing would be needed. Again.

He would not be so useless next time.

Aaron was alive, Robert reminded himself, he was alive and happy and healthy. He’d wolfed down two quarter pounders on the drive up here and beamed when he caught Robert looking at him. Robert had wiped away a streak of mustard at the corner of Aaron’s mouth with his thumb (to much protestation from his other half).

But it all could have gone so wrong two years ago.

Robert couldn’t get him out of the car before he went under. He couldn’t hold it together long enough. Aaron had almost died because he was weak.

No. He would do better than 37 seconds. He had to.

Robert resurfaced for a breather, shoving his goggles on to his head to reset the timer on his swanky waterproof watch. He’d treated himself to it a few months ago. At the time, Robert wasn’t sure what had made Aaron spit out his coffee: when he told him the price of the watch or when he told him he’d bought a matching one for his husband.

Then he heard the splashing. He brushed it off as Aaron mucking about, but the sound got faster and louder. Robert looked up. Aaron was swimming straight towards him – well, you couldn’t call it swimming really. He was just…moving as fast as he could. It didn’t matter how. His arms were beating the water desperately, like he was being chased. Robert could hear Aaron’s laboured breathing as he approached.

Something was up.

Robert called out, “Are you alright?”

The force of Aaron launching himself into Robert’s arms took the wind out of him. Aaron clung to Robert, both arms around his neck. He was shaking.

On instinct Robert held him tighter, bringing one hand up to cradle the back of his head.

“Hey, hey what’s happened?” he said, fighting to keep the panic out of his voice.

Aaron was whimpering: I’m safe. Just that, over and over again. I’m safe.

Robert made soothing noises in Aaron’s ear as they held each other close, their wet, cool bodies together, feet treading water in sync, each acting as a buoy for the other. Aaron’s stomach pushed in and out against Robert’s as he gasped for breath.

“It’s okay Aaron. I’m here. I’ve got you.” Robert said

“I’m safe, I’m safe, I’m safe”

Aaron’s voice was high and thin, like it had been that day in the car two years ago.

Robert stroked his damp hair, “That’s right, you’re safe. We both are. You’re alright, I promise. Easy…easy…”

“Stay with me. Please.”

“I’m going nowhere. What’s happened? Talk to me.”

Aaron swallowed hard before answering: “The car…the water”.

His words were like a punch to Robert’s stomach.

Something had obviously happened to Aaron in the lake to bring back memories of the crash, and it had hit him hard. God why hadn’t he been keeping a closer eye on him?

Aaron had almost died that day. Robert’s chest tightened as he remembered his husband screaming at him to save himself.

I am not having you die in here because of me!

And Robert, falling apart, sobbing

I’m not leaving you! No!

He was ready to die in that car with this man.

Aaron was making small fists in the hair at the nape of Robert’s neck, eyes gently closed. His breathing was slowing but he showed no signs of letting go.

“You’re safe” Robert reminded him – and he’d never stop reminding him. “You’re alive and you’re safe. I’ve got you.”

He would get to 40 seconds tomorrow.
