Lily’s mind was blank. Just. Blank. She wasn’t expecting James to follow her. That little vulnerable part of her, the one that ran by her heart, wished desperately that he’d follow, but her logic was screaming otherwise. She knew him, even before they became friendly she knew his way of doing things. And it wasn’t him to follow her out - especially this year when all he did was give her space space and nothing but more space. Just when she didn’t want it anymore, he was leaving her to be and work out their relationship’s dynamics at her own pace. But that wasn’t what the redhead wanted anymore. The war was coming and she was growing and she wanted to love, she wanted to live before it was too late. She would be Leia and she wanted her Han Solo. Which she had decided was James.
The confusion, hurt, anger was all boiling into one emotion that she had never felt before. She’d later on figure out it was that daredevil bravery the Gryffindors supposed to posess. Before she could give much thought to it, she found herself acting upon her feelings for once rather than her brain. “I’m angry because -!” she started, her heart beating at her throat. She couldn’t finish her sentence. Her hands has gone cold with nerves and she could swear she was about to start shaking. She couldn’t muster up the words maybe, but she did the one thing she never thought she would do. The closeness working in her favor at the moment, not leaving a moment for her to think it through, she raised on her toes and her hand rested on his chest to balance herself. The next thing she knew she was tasting the booze he’s been drinking. From his lips directly.
James gasped in surprise as Lily crushed her lips against his, but it only took him a second to react. He wasn’t sure why she was kissing him. Hell, he wasn’t even sure he cared. Her behaviour was erratic... confusing. But right now, all he could think about was the fact that Lily Evans was kissing him. He had dreamed about this moment for years, but he had no idea she would feel this good. He opened his mouth hungrily, matching her enthusiasm. Before he knew it, his hands were tangled in her hair, he used his body to push her back against the wall, terrified that at any second, she could end it all.

“No, I’m not crying,” Lily said but her shaky voice gave her away. Well at least she wasn’t shedding tears and embarrassing herself even more. “What?! No! I don’t want you to stop seeing anyone! I don’t care who you sleep with!” she snapped. “Just-just stay away from me, Potter.” she said, pushing past him as she made a beeline for the door. She knew she was going to regret telling him that, a part of her wishing he’d follow and the stubborn part of her wanting to nothing with him because admittedly she was heartbroken.
“Well it doesn’t seem like it, Lils!” James snapped back, matching Lily’s tone. “It actually feels like you care a whole lot! I wish you would just be honest with me!” He watched her leave, flinching at the harshness of her words, before chasing after her, grabbing her arm to spin her around. He knew if he was sober he would have let her leave, not wanting to cross a line, maybe even made an inappropriate joke as she climbed through the portrait hole... now though, he felt vulnerable. His go-to defence mechanism was humour but his mind was entirely blank. “Lily, just tell me what I’ve done wrong. What I’ve actually done wrong here, I’m not talking about Jane! Why are you angry?”

Lily instinctively took a step back when James yelled, her back hitting the table behind her softly, indicating her that she was cornered between him and the table behind her. Her eyes went wide as he became angry, a sight she never saw directed at herself. He had valid questions however she couldn’t answer them. One, she didn’t know herself and two, she’d eventually would have to admit she was seeing him more than a friend despite everyone thinking she hated him for years. So stayed silent, just looking at his face with still a little big eyes that resembled a scared doe, her bottom lip shaking as she tried hard to keep her composure.
James regretted getting angry the moment he saw Lily’s expression change. She looked... fearful. Of him. It was an expression he hoped he would never, ever have to see again. “Lily- I’m sorry... I didn’t meant to shout at you, I didn’t-” He broke off, not knowing what to say. He could reign his anger in, sure. But he couldn’t repress his frustration. He wasn’t sure what she wanted from him, he didn’t know how she was feeling because she wouldn’t tell him. How was he supposed to fix things if he didn’t have all of the information? “Are you- are you crying?” He asked, “Merlin, Lily. Please don’t cry. I’ll stop seeing Jane if you want me to, okay? I’ll stop.”

Everything James said was only making her heart break more. So it really was true. There was something between them. And the fact that James so easily said they were sleeping together send a pang of jealousy in her heart. Because she couldn’t imagine two people having sex with no feelings for each other whatsoever. That just never happened in her own reality. “Do you have such arrangements with all your friends, Potter?” she asked, her tone bitter. While she wasn’t sure when her platonic feelings for the boy turned into something more, she did distinctly remember finding herself daydreaming about kissing him, holding hands and every generic romantic things a couple of 17 years old did and even then she could hardly picture herself being the girl next to him. He was quiet the heartthrob every passing year while she seemingly became more annoying and boring progressively. And now she could so easily picture him and Jane in a bed, being a little naughty in the locker room and her offering up so much more than she’d even think of herself. Jane wasn’t boring, she was brave and people seemed to find her fun. Lily barely realized she was getting carried away with her internal pity party when James caught onto the true meaning behind her words. She felt her cheeks and the tips of her ears turning red as a tomato and her eyes almost bulged out of their sockets. She didn’t think twice about lying through her teeth. She had humiliated herself enough, she wasn’t going to stand there and confess her affections when he clearly moved on from whatever romantic feelings he might have had - if he ever did that is. “What? Of course not. I wore it as your friend. Nothing more. Never.” she glared at him. “I was made aware of the inappropriate nature of the situation very rudely by another girl. Who made sure I knew I looked like a pathetic wannabe girlfriend of yours,” she scoffed and pushed his hand that was holding the shirt towards his chest in anger. “Keep it, throw it away, give it to some other devoted fan of yours. I don’t care. I don’t want it.”
James wasn’t sure whether the alcohol had rendered him speechless, or the shock at Lily’s words. They were so cold and bitter, he didn’t expect that from her, not ever. It broke his heart. Clearly she was hurting but she kept changing her mind, backtracking... he wasn’t even entirely sure he understood why she was so upset. “What? Lily, of course not! You’re being-” He broke off, knowing no matter how he ended that sentence he was going to make things worse. It was only when he caught her blushing that his hope was rekindled. Maybe she was wearing it as more than a friend. Maybe... but no, she had made that clear to him so many times now. She didn’t want to be more than friends, she didn’t like him in that way. “There was no inappropriate situation!” James all but yelled, running an exasperated hand through his hair. “I’m so confused, Evans! Just tell me why you’re really upset, I’m going to get fucking whiplash!”

“Oh you haven’t? I guess I’ll have to eat your plate too,” he teased, laughing a bit. “I’m just a little bit hungry. It’s sort of hard training your body not to eat during the full moon.” He lowered his voice to a whisper. “Leaves me with a bigger appetite than normal… the wolf.”
James narrowed his eyes at Remus. “You wouldn’t dare.” He said slowly. “I will pick a fight with a Werewolf if I have to.” He teased. “Don’t think I won’t do it. If you go near my food then I swear to Merlin...”

“Who?” Lily scoffed, shaking her head. Was he mocking her? Did she come of as that big of an idiot? “Jane, Potter. Jane!” she said, throwing her hands in the air in exasperation. “Are you not involved with her?” she asked, crossing her arms across her chest. “So how is it not inappropriate for me to wear your shirt?” she raised a brow. “And here I was - I - trying to play your stupid flirtation game,” she muttered under her breath in a moment of weakness but a second later, noticing how close he was and might be able to hear, she tried to cover it up. “Since we’re friends now, I mean. But - but! But it’s weird if you’re in something with Jane! She can’t wear it because she’s also playing and is wearing quidditch gear.” she explained thinking it was his drunken state that caused his confusion. She was now not only angry but hurt as well seeing James wasn’t even taking her seriously.
“Jane? I- what?” James’ eyes widened as he suddenly realised what Lily was talking about. How had she found out? He knew he shouldn’t mind, it was innocent, after all... but somehow he felt as though he might have betrayed her. He couldn’t understand why. He had been fine with his arrangement just a few days prior, but now, looking at Lily’s heartbroken expression, he was beginning to doubt himself. “That- that’s nothing!” He insisted, Jane hadn’t even come to his mind when Lily had mentioned him being involved with someone. That’s how platonic their relationship was. “It’s just a mutual agreement! Between friends!” He cursed himself inwardly. Whatever he said, he knew it was only going to make things worse. He felt his heart shatter when Lily called him a friend, even though he was convinced that was how she had always felt about him. It hurt to hear... “If you were wearing it as a friend then why would it be inappropriate?” He asked curiously, his fear momentarily forgotten as he realised the implication behind Lily’s words. “Lily...” He said slowly. “Lily, were you- did it- were you wearing it as more than a friend?”

“Whatever you say, James. But, if that changes You tell me and I’ll get out of the way.” She replied, not wanting to upset her friend any further. At his jokes she shook her head with refusal to laugh. “You’re relentless.”
James smiled, trying not to show how badly Jane’s words were affecting him. He was suddenly losing confidence, maybe he was doing the wrong thing here. What he has with Jane was innocent and fun, she was his first time, after all. And it was a mutual agreement. But perhaps his feelings for Evans were more obvious than he’d originally thought. Everybody knew he liked to flirt with her and tease her. but was that unfair if he was sleeping with somebody else? As far as he knew, she only wanted to be friends though... so maybe not. Maybe it was fine. “You’ll be the first to know.” He teased, “but don’t pretend you wont cry yourself to sleep that night. I’m relentless and you love it.”

He offered a small, appreciative smile when James offered his hand. He didn’t like to talk about it but the full moons had his body weak the week after and he always tried to make less of pain for the sake of not being a burden amongst his friends. But his closer friends, the ones who knew, had always tried to help him. He took the hand and stood up. “Thanks.” He smiled as he moved towards the castle with James. “I’m think I’m going to have to have the chicken. And definitely chocolate pudding.”
“Mmmmmm,” James grinned, speeding up as they approached the Great Hall. “Don’t, Moony! I haven’t eaten all day!” He raised his eyebrows at his friends appetite, sometimes he didn’t eat for days, usually before or after a full moon. It was refreshing to hear him looking forward to a proper meal. “I see I don’t need to worry about you starving yourself to death this month.” He half teased, although they both knew he did worry.

Lily took notice of his sad expression upon realizing she wasn’t there for the whole match, which added fuel to her irrational anger. What was he playing? Why was he so disappointed that she missed his catch if she wasn’t the one he was trying to woo anymore? Sure she was naive when it came to love and relationships but still this behavior was undecipherable to her. She shrugged when he asked if she didn’t see him catch the snitch. “Congratulations, I heard you won, ” she said, unable to hide the pride hidden behind her mirthless act. She couldn’t help but let the air out through her nose a little too loud when he claimed he didn’t understand. “What’s not to understand, Potter?” she asked, sounding a little too aggressive for her own liking. “I don’t think it’s appropriate to just wear a shirt with your name plastered on it when you’re involved with someone let alone wear a shirt you /made/. It’s…” she trailed off, not able to find the right word. “I’m not the person you should’ve given this to even if she’s technically not able to wear it herself.”
James tried to hide how much her comment hurt him. He really thought they had been making progress, clearly he had been wrong. He held the shirt tightly, wanting to put it down but not being able to let it go. The memory of Lily wearing it still fresh in his mind. “Involved with someone? What- who?” He stumbled over his words, trying to figure out who Lily could possibly be talking about. “Who wouldn’t be able to wear it?”

“James-” She started when his hand was on her thigh. “Maybe that’s all the more reason to go to her. Who knows how much time you and Lily will have and I don’t want to be in the way of that…” She said, her hand grabbing his, not yet removing it from her thigh. “You might be able to have something real, Potter. Don’t be a git and get in the way of yourself being happy if she’s what you genuinely want.” Her eyes locked to his before sighing and removing her hands, caving in. “I’ll let it go this once, because of my own selfishness. But, After this, you need to sort yourself out.“
“Lily doesn’t want to be more than friends.” James sighed, pulling his hand away from Jane. “And I don’t want to ruin what we have so I’m not pushing her, I refuse to... not anymore. She’s made it pretty clear how she feels, Jane.” He frowned, glaring at her petulantly. “You think I’m being destructive.” He observed. “I’m not. I’m being realistic.” A smile tugged at his lips when Jane gave in and like flicking a switch, he was back to his usual self. “I told you I was irresistible.” He teased.

Lily was going through range of emotions. First it was embarrassment at the game when that girl approached her. Then sadness. More embarrassment. Jealousy. Confusion. Anger - directed toward herself for being so stupid. But not once she was mad at James. That was until he came around next to her, all cheerful and happy. She was annoyed, angry. The smell of fire whiskey hit her nose when he spoke and she scrunched her nose more in annoyance than disgust. “I left early. I have homework.” she said flatly, nodding towards her books and parchments. She was glad that it was him who brought up the shirt and not her. She got up from her seat, taking the wrapped material and stood in front of him, arms extended to give it to him. “I don’t think I should keep this.”
James frowned, he could tell Lily was thinking over something serious. “You left early?” He asked, his expression cresfallen. He reached out to take her hand, “wait, does that mean you didn’t see me catch the Snitch?” He asked, unable to hide his disappointment. He had only been feeling so good about his win because he knew Lily had seen it, had seen him at his best. He stumbled backwards as she thrust the package towards him, his balance a little unreliable. “I- I don’t get it. What is this?” He asked, hoping it was a present but knowing, from her expression, that it definitely wasn’t. He pulled off the paper, throwing it to the ground and holding up the shirt. “I... what? Lils... I don’t understand.”

“Good,” he grinned at the boy before getting up. “Cmon, let’s get some food and forget about the Puff team.”
“I had forgotten about the Puff team until you just said that, jeez.” James grinned, teasing his friend. He stood up, offering his hand to his friend, helping him to his feet. It wasn’t something they liked to talk about but sometimes Remus needed the extra help, and James knew he would never ask for it. “To the Great Hall, Moony! Come on, let’s go.” He threw an arm around his shoulder, pulling him towards the Castle. He hadn’t realised how hungry he was until Remus had mentioned food.

“No, no, James, No. We’re not taking the dragons to play with them. We’re taking one of theirs eggs so I can raise it.” Charity looked over at him, suddenly regretting telling James Potter this information. “We’re not stealing any dragons to do something crazy with them.”
“Oooh, okay. Because that’s far more logical.” James said sarcastically, nudging Charity with his shoulder. “Raising a Dragon from an egg you stole is normal, completely normal. In fact, that’s how I spent the majority of my Summer. That’s just how totally not crazy that idea is. Can I at least use your tame Dragon for pranks once it’s fully grown? Huh?”

“Because that’s convincing.” Jane sassed at the boy, her amusement clear as she. She listened to James and debated his question for a moment before nodding. “I’m going to be honest with you, James. I just want whats in your best interest. And, I’m not saying We couldn’t continue this, but Eventually you’re going to want to be with Lily Evans, and I don’t want to be the one in the way of that.”
James rolled his eyes. “What’s in my best interest...” He said lowly, deliberately placing his hand on Jane’s knee and slowly moving it up to her thigh. “Is having fun while I still can. While we still can. There’s- there’s some pretty bad shit happening outside of these walls, Jane. I don’t know what’s going to happen with Evans, but this is totally harmless,” he raised his eyebrow flirtatiously, letting his gaze linger on her lips. “Right?”

Lily was in the common room, sitting at the big long table, doing her astronomy homework when the crowd of proud housemates and players rolled in. They were celebrating their win as usual and she hoped the noise would die down in ten minutes. Which it did. People congratulated the players and slowly went up to their own rooms. The common room wasn’t as empty as before but it was once again suitable for studying in her quiet corner.
Not that she was there for that reason though. She was there to give James what didn’t belong to her. The shirt he gave her a few days ago, the one she was wearing just half an hour ago was neatly folded and wrapped with a brown paper, sitting next to the pile of books, waiting to be given back. James was still there, talking to a few friends and she was keeping an eye on him to make sure she’d have an opportunity to give it back to him before he went up to his room as well.
@jamespotter77
James grinned to himself, watching the Snitch he had stolen flicker around above the common room. Earlier there had been cheers for him to jump up and pull it out of the sky, now the room was emptying and there was nobody left to perform for. He ran a hand through his hair, the dispersing crowd doing nothing to dull his elation. The Firewhiskey a Fifth Year had managed to sneak into the Castle quite possibly had something to do with that, but he couldn’t be sure. It was only as the final group of students began to exit through the portrait hole that he noticed Lily. He had spotted her briefly at the game, heart soaring at the image of her in the shirt he had made, but until now, he hadn’t been able to see her at the afterparty, He swiped a cup from the coffee table, examining the contents before downing the drink in one. “Evans.” He called, “You came! Where have you been? I’ve been looking for you!” He frowned, suddenly noticing what she was wearing. “Hey, what happened to the shirt?”

“James Potter, are you afraid?” Jane asked, Amused but concerned. Before he could answer she shook her head. “Listen, If you want things to keep going, you know how to find me. But, If you properly fancy the girl, don’t hold yourself back.”
“No!” James said defiantly, sounding a little like a petulant child. “James Potter is never afraid.” He crossed his arms, narrowing his eyes at Jane. He knew the subject was a relatively serious one, what with it impacting the both of them emotionally and also affecting his relationship with LIly, but he never was one for being serious. Life was too short for that. “Why wouldn’t I want to continue our arrangement?” He asked. “Look, Lily is finally being civil with me, I’m not about to ruin that, besides... we were having fun, weren’t we? Come on, you know you can’t resist this.”
