I'm all for reading into the lasting effects of her experience with the RBT (I like these theories a fair bit actually!), but let's not gloss over the fact that Amanda was a full-blown heroin addict. Homegirl's brain was permanently physically & physiologically transformed by her addiction. Tbh, looking at this from the POV of an actress rather than an Amanda apologist, I'd bet Shawnee was thinking more about the long-term effects of drug addiction than about munching on the RBT (specifically referring to things like head jerking/the supposed oral fixation -- there's no denying some of Amanda's "off-ness" is a result of being horrendously traumatised). Restlessness, jaw clenching, twitching/jerking, impulsivity, and cognitive/mental health issues were baked into the character long before her dance w the RBT imo! Shawnee Smith did a brilliant job breathing life & depth into our homicidal gf. <3

One of the things I like about Shawnee Smith's performance as Amanda is how twitchy and hardly ever fully composed she is.

Some of it is obviously a factor of something like PTSD. For example the jerky head movements and also scrambling to feel her head because of her experience within the reverse bear trap.

Amanda tends to always be under high stress situations anytime we see her. It’s not a shock that she is never well put together... She tends to clench her jaw a lot? Alongside just moving her mouth a ton. This is partially due to panic and heavy breathing but also I'm assuming a soothing motion.... If you really want to read into it, Amanda may have some oral fixation type stuff going on after having the reverse bear trap attached to her jaw. Oh and we also have the shoulder shrugging of course.

July in January Fest 2025

July in January Fest is a monthlong fanworks event for the FX series Fargo and the 1996 Coen Brothers movie which inspired it. Unlike the source material, works created for the event must be set during the summer months.

The second annual event will run during the entire month of January 2025.

Why summer?

Haven't you ever wondered what your favorite Fargo characters do when it’s hot outside? How do they dress? Do they relish the sunshine or pine for snow? Do they stay home or go on vacation?

Contrary to what’s depicted on screen, the Midwest isn’t always cold. Transformative works give us the opportunity to explore the season we never get to see.

What types of fanworks are allowed?

Due to the fact that the source material doesn’t explicitly depict characters in summer, only fanfiction and fanart will be allowed for the time being.

However, if you have an idea for GIFs, graphics, fanmixes, fanvids, meta, etc., which follow the theme, feel free to send an ask or a message about it, and an exception may be made.

Are crossovers allowed?

Crossovers between the Fargo TV series and the Fargo movie are allowed. Crossovers with non-Fargo fandoms are not.

Do I have to follow the schedule?

The schedule is completely optional, and is only there to provide inspiration for those who might need it. Feel free to ignore it entirely, or switch around the days. 

The prompts will repeat each week according to the corresponding day, so if you want to keep to the schedule, you’ll have a few chances.

Where and when should I post my work?

You can post your fanworks in the AO3 collection, and/or on Tumblr. When posting on Tumblr, be sure to use the tag #julyinjanuary2025, or mention @julyinjanuaryfest​ in the post.

The collection will open at approximately 12 am EST on January 1 and close at approximately 11:59 pm EST on January 31. Eligible works posted on Tumblr during the same period will be reblogged to this account.

Are there any other requirements?

Nope! Works of any length, rating, category, and archive warning are eligible, featuring any character(s) from the Fargo universe. Feel free to post as many works as you’d like, as long as they fit the theme.
