It’s not often that he’s mistaken for his partner, his thick layers even at the height of humid Konoha summers tends to help with the distinction, but Torune can’t help but wonder if this person has the Ino-Shika-Cho tradition in mind. “While some shinobi clans use piercings as a rite of passage my clan isn’t one of them.  Also, I don’t think it would be very practical for my jutsu.” Perhaps he should elaborate. 

“Although the shinobi rule ‘Prepare before it’s too late to’ usually refers to strategy I think ninja should also be prepared for some basic assumptions of battle. People fight to win and will use any means necessary to. Never give someone an opening that could be avoided. And given that I often have to quickly remove my coat for better grappling…” He trusts they see issue with that particular aesthetic choice.

“Whether you follow the “shinobi rules” or the Root code of conduct I’d give the same recommendation we give younger Root trainees, ‘Never wear something that can be ripped out of you during combat.’”

MUSE NAME: Aburame Torune

LEAST FAVORITE NICKNAME: “Not-Shino” (more so, he’s annoyed by people who can’t be bothered to learn or remember his name rather than by a particular nickname)

LEAST FAVORITE COLOR: White. 

LEAST FAVORITE SEASON: Winter, specifically in Amegakure and greater rain country.

LEAST FAVORITE WEATHER: Sleet/freezing rain. See question above.

LEAST FAVORITE—HOT OR COLD: He doesn’t like temperature extremes in general as both can cause hive reactions. Like with high fevers, if Torune’s body temperature changes too quickly his nanobeetles can’t cope and will attempt bring themselves back to “equilibrium” by any means necessary (forcing their way to the surface of his skin, burrowing into his internal organs for warmth, etc.) which is deeply unpleasant. For being so deadly nanobeetles are actually rather fragile in the physiological sense because they’re so dependent on their hosts.

LEAST FAVORITE FOOD/DRINK/FLAVOR: Sweets/desserts in general, his only exception is licorice. 

LEAST FAVORITE SCENT: Post-mortem rotting. Although it doesn’t trigger his gag reflex anymore (very little does after training), Torune firmly doesn’t enjoy the smell.

LEAST FAVORITE SOUND: There’s a noise cancelling frequency that’s often played nearby the sparring rooms in Root headquarters. It’s subtle but once you notice it your ears will ring until you leave the area. While it’s unpleasant it’s very useful for practicing auditory genjutsu.

LEAST FAVORITE SCHOOL SUBJECT OR AREA OF STUDY: While Torune never attended the ninja academy he found Root’s basic medical training extremely frustrating. This training is based around simple emergency first aid such as bandaging wounds, small things that can increase mission success. In particular, Torune struggled with chakra transfer (giving someone else a little of your own chakra to stave off chakra exhaustion) as his hive fought him on the technique every attempt, his nanobeetles being wholly unwilling to part with their host’s ‘resources’. Trying to force the jutsu gives Torune a ‘nails in a blender sensation’ in his chakra coils whenever he tries. He’s never been able to master that particular technique. 

LEAST FAVORITE ASPECT OF THEIR JOB: As one of Root’s high ranking members Torune is often expected to review younger recruit’s performance. If their progress is unsatisfactory (or they are beginning to show signs of resisting the Code) he’s tasked with determining whether they can be salvaged and acting along the appropriate channels. This can range from splitting up pairs to deliberately moving someone’s graduation exam up before they’re ready. Unlike the straightforward R&R missions to eliminate rogue Roots, Torune often thinks that these younger recruits might have adapted better given more time. 

LEAST FAVORITE PERSON: He does have one but he’d rather not mention them. Holding personal grudges is firmly against Root Code and Torune considers it a personal failing that he hasn’t been able move beyond it yet. One of the ways he’s tried to combat this is by reminding himself of that person’s useful qualities and how he can learn from them.

LEAST FAVORITE PLACE: Rather than a specific place he doesn’t like revisiting locations from his old missions.

LEAST FAVORITE THING TO TALK ABOUT: It particularly bothers him when the younger Root ninja start “hole-poking” and asking questions that they know will get them in trouble, such as trying to find out details about the graduation examinations or Lord Danzo’s personal affairs.

LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT THEMSELVES: “Lack of self-control” whether it be over his hive or being overly emotional by Root standards. Torune thinks he’s improved in both over time.

LEAST FAVORITE DAILY CHORE: Chores don’t both him much. He prefers to be busy even if it’s by doing something doesn’t enjoy.

LEAST FAVORITE STYLE OF CLOTHING: Impractical.

“Good evening,” he echoes, somewhat confused by the personal greeting. Her demeanor doesn’t fit the all too familiar empty eyed Root mold so how does she know his name? Could this be  a friend of Shino’s?

“Thank you for your time.” But despite his usual stiff formalities, Torune offers a rare smile at sight of the food. The last several months have been an unbroken hum of missions, only fermenting the worry that this is the longest he’s gone between health checks since he joined Root. The gesture feels like permission to take a breath, even if he’s due back to the assignment office in a few hours. “I apologize if this is short notice.”

The Protagonist

     “They will,” she assured. It was pretty hard to ignore a giant orb weaver and its long, spindly legs bouncing all over the place. If they didn’t know where the two were exactly, they could follow the scout she’d sent off. “Keep breathing and relax. You’ll be okay.” She was doing a very good job at keeping herself rational, even if it was a friend. “Count as you breathe and clear your mind. You haven’t bled all over yourself yet…”       With one hand pressed onto the gauze (slowly turning color), she briefly wrestled with the cloak over her shoulders. The thick, burgundy cloth would help him from feeling cold, and maybe bring a little more comfort. Relieve the anxiety. “I won’t go anywhere. And if I have to, I’ll summon more spiders to keep our perimeter. Help is coming, and you’ll be alright.”      A pause, followed by a quick breath. “It’s good we’re still in our own territory. This is better circumstances than being off in the jungles, Tor.”

So the blurry stripes out the corners of his eyes hadn’t been passing trees? As he tried to stay still and count, inhale-exhale encourage a more even pulse, Torune slowly noticed his periphery come more into focus. Like the bleeding, he hadn’t noticed it had all blurred into streaks of grey-green-brown until the lightheadedness had set in. Both signs pointed to significant blood loss and its close associate: hypovolemic shock.

Her reassurances were appreciated, but felt like a low hum in comparison to his hive’s rising panic.  

Breaking off from his counting, He shook his head, hoping to clear some of the residual grogginess. “I appreciate the lack of carnivorous animals, but there may still be problems. Doesn’t medical ninjutsu use physical contact for deeper wounds?” Furthermore, would a medic agree to treat him at all once they understood the risk involved?

     “I’m fine.” This was to be expected. Showing a hint of weakness was not allowed. She couldn’t possibly think of being a burden on a mission, even one as small as this. She was the strong one– the one who’d fought through social and physical ranks to get where she was now. She had to be the rock.      Chakra exhaustion would have been a logical assumption. She didn’t want to acknowledge it. With all the experimentation of jutsus on herself, she was taking a risk with every new, unorthodox idea… no, it couldn’t degrade her system that fast. Impossible. Just exhaustion. A lot of fatigue. “We’ll just take a break sooner. It’ll put off our arrival time, but only by a few minutes.”

“That would affect our assignment the least... But there’s no need to push yourself unnecessarily.” The words sounded hollow and hypocritical from a former Root agent and snagged in his throat, as though the lingering burns from his secrecy seal wanted to keep this down too. 

Even as they continued between the large sequoias just beyond Konoha’s outer wall, the new plan in place, his doubts swirled. If this was only from lack of sleep, why hadn’t she brought it up before they’d departed? For a routine mission like outpost schedule deliveries she might have been able to swap hours the day of. Trying not to pry to deeply he wondered, “This isn’t related to any of your recent projects, is it?”
