Tianqi—dome test

We met at 1:30 pm and made the final edits and checks on the video. Made some changes to the sound and effects of the video. After determining the final plan, we added VR effects to the video. Make the video look good. We then tested the video. The test worked great, and it was unexpected to me. Fully demonstrated our philosophy.

 Then we also watched the works of other groups, and everyone made very professional and excellent, which made me feel that our works have many shortcomings. But this was done by everyone, and I have great confidence in our work. I have great trust in my team members, and they are very lucky and happy to be with them.

OUTCOME - VIDEO 

This is the end result of our work (video without dome effect). Our idea was to merge the 4 seasons with the 4 elements. We decided to represent this through abstract images created in ink + water. Each color represents a season and each sound represents one of the elements.

All images were filmed by our group using a gopro, the audios were taken from free internet forums made available for general use, and the video was also edited by the group.

Raquel - Dome test / final meeting

Yesterday was the day when we all sat down together to finish our video. We met at the LRC, I took my laptop and we were able to access the video that I had previously edited.

As a group we agreed that we needed to make some changes to the audio, so we did, we added more transitions and made sure the audio was constant and uninterrupted. After that, through the LRC's computers, we used after effects to create the dome effect, I confess that in this part I didn't help much, but Kathrin and Tianqi did a good job. With our video ready we all went to Dome to take the test.

I was very impressed with our video, I believe we managed to get the effect we were hoping for, of course it is not a perfect video, because it was the first time we used this technique and these software and we only had 2 weeks to complete everything, but even so I was happy with the result. We asked if all the girls in the group were happy with the result and if anyone wanted to change anything, and we all agreed that it was that good.

I used the rest of the afternoon to stay inside the dome and watch the work of other groups, I was very impressed with the quality of the videos of the other colleagues, really everyone worked really hard, some videos were so good and so professional that they even hit one certain insecurity about ours, but even so we know that we delivered the best we could according to the knowledge we had. It was a working day but it was rewarding.

Devaki- In-Dome Testing

Today we met up before the Dome test to make some final changes in the video and to export the final version. We added some fade ins to make the audio transitions smoother between each represented season. We were quite happy with the result and went to test it out in the Dome.

The testing proves successful as our final product came out as we had pretty much anticipated. Ian seemed happy with it too, so we decided to not make any further changes to it.

I stayed back to take a look at the testing of other groups too and all of them were very interesting and different. I think overall it was a great experience as we all got to step out of our home discipline and work with people who weren’t like-minded. It helped broaden our perspectives and work on something new.

Aiyu - In-dome Testing

We met at 1:30pm to see our final video effect and listen to the sound of the video. We readjusted the sound of the video, including the editing of the sound and the change of the transition sound. We proofread each frame of animation , sound, time and location. Finally, we converted the video into the final dome format. The final video completely showed the process of ink drops falling in the water. We added sounds that correspond to the four seasons in the video to make our video richer.

All in all, this time our group completed the production of the video together. Each part was completed by each of our members after discussion. We also kept discussing the most suitable angle when shooting the video. We also revised the video many times. In the end, we think that the effect of our video presentation is good, and we are more familiar with the production of video editing.

Kathrin - Converting/Testing Day

We met up together as a team to watch and listen through the video one last time as we have had time between the last time we watched and today. I feel like this is important so you have time to digest the work and when you see it again you may notice new issues that you hadn’t noticed before.

After having listened to it again after a team member asked about the sounds I noticed we should soften the merge of audio together. We added another layer of audio to smooth over the transition and playing it back to make sure it’s smooth. We wanted to make sure it wasn’t harsh as our imagery is based on fluidity and we want the audio to have fluid transitions. We also added fade outs to the under lying and main audio to try and blend them together more.

Overall I am rather happy with how the video turned out after having been converted into the final dome format. We then went to the dome to test the video to make sure the format was right and we were happy with how the sound was played with the speakers. I was pleasantly surprised with how the sound played as there is the section for autumn which I wasn’t sure was loud enough however with the speakers it gave a perfect deep base to the audio which I found rather immersive. It was the original audio from the GoPro from underneath the water and ink and makes you feel as if you are trapped under a layer of leaves. This is how I interpret the section.

After having watched I made sure to check in with the team to see if we were happy with the results or if they felt like we needed changes. We decided to stick with how it was currently as we were all happy with it.

I enjoyed the outcome more than I thought I would as the dome’s experience was more immersive that I thought it would be. This also pushed me out of my comfort zone which I then tried to handle it so that I didn’t feel lost but tried to make smaller goals and make sure the team was working together throughout all the steps so we all could turn to each other for help as someone may know a specific piece information that others may not.

Tianqi—AE works

During the study of AE, I tried to make a small dot VR video.

After the discussion, I thought and created the collected materials. The first thing I thought of was the effect of ink painting. I try to make videos using AE and Premiere. The other members tried to make / edit the video. I tried to edit the video by adding pictures representing the four seasons to the elements of ink painting. I first used PS and AE to make short video material with ink spread. Then use Premiere to edit the material and pictures, and then add music.

Tianqi—second meeting

We plan to meet on Friday at 9:30 and we have reserved a room in the library. Shot of an ink intended to catch the ink that has fallen into the water. Since the GoPro we checked out is waterproof, we still have the idea of ​​shooting from the outside and inside. At the same time, notice that the ink floats on the water to form a marble pattern. After the first meeting, we decided to go back to thinking and doing research. When thinking about ideas, I first selected a few keywords. The first thing I thought of was “limitless”. Because we are going to make a 2-minute video. Our team members study different majors, and this topic has a lot of room for everyone to develop. We can create different aspects of this theme. For example, resource, color, space, love, etc.

Raquel - editing the video

As I have a video editing program on my computer, I offered to edit the video over the weekend, so we would meet on Monday just to make some changes. The program I used is called "wondershare filmora", it is a simple program to use and that met our needs well.

As we had already talked in group what we imagined for the result of the video, I chose the frames that were suitable with our idea of ​​joining the sounds and images and creating the feeling of being seeing the different seasons.

After choosing the images I went after the sounds and found some sites that provided free sounds for general use. I explored some options and found it interesting to create the video track with the sounds of water, birds, fire and wind. So after collecting all this material I started editing.

I gathered the frames and the audios according to what we had already agreed on as a group and saved the project without rendering the video. On Monday I showed the result to the girls and then together we made small changes and finished the video.

Devaki- 2nd Meeting

https://youtu.be/ejU84CoVNW0For the second meeting, I worked on the motion painting idea but it didn’t turn out as impressive as I had thought. Since we were working on a big screen, I wanted the editing to be more absorbing, with bigger motions.

We decided to use the edits Raquel had made in the software she was familiar with. I looked through some opensource nature sound audios that we could use for the video. There were some good chirping sounds, wind and rain sounds I found using epidemicsound.com and freemusicarchive.com

We finished editing the video and adding in the audio to the corresponding colours representing each season and decided to meet up early on Wednesday, before the Dome testing so we add a few final touches to our outcome.

Aiyu - Video/Photo Collection

We plan to meet at 9:30 and start shooting the video of the ink falling into the water. Before the video shooting, we went to the art shop to collect the materials. We plan to buy acrylic ink and drop it in the water to shoot the video of the ink sliding on the water. After we discussed decide to use blue, green, yellow, orange, red inks and mix different ink. Later we used Gopro for underwater shooting, of course we also have external shooting because we consider that shooting from two different angles will make the video richer and more complete.

During the shooting, we tried two methods. First, we put Gopro into a large glass jar to record videos. We performed repeated experiments. We experimented with the speed of dripping ink, the amount of ink, and the color combinations that can be performed with different ink colors. The second time we put Gopro in a transparent plastic cup. Because the cup mouth of the plastic cup is round, the video visually presents a different effect. Below is a photo record of our experiments.

Kathrin - Video Meeting

Today we had our meeting to look at the edited video which Raquel edited over the weekend as she had video editing software that she knew how to use. The main goal of the meeting was to see where we are currently and what still needs to be done along with discussing the video at the current moment.

The video was overall done, in the sense of it having all the elements of sound and images set in a sequence. We watched it together and if anyone had anything to say we all discussed it and made the changes if we agreed or discussed other options to solve the issue. Some of the sequences of the video was shuffled around along with editing the sound effects to make them come across as more fluid and cohesive. We had stuck with using the video footage we took from within the water in the cups and some from within the tank. The videos are to represent different seasons and as we had to use limited colours to represent this we focused also on the choice of sounds that accompanied each section and at the very end we used footage that was more accidental than planned which was when we were cleaning and used it as a reference as the seasons repeat themselves but you can also look at is cleansing the cycle anew for the next cycle.

However as we were watching the video we also noticed how the video could also be interpreted as the viewer is inside a petri dish or within a container which is being experimented on as during the recording you are able to see our hands adding in the ink or our faces which makes it come across as we are looking down upon those who are looking up. The ink’s can be seen as chemical liquids in a fantastical directional rather than realistic and that we are experimenting on others

Since this is our first time working with premier and after effects we couldn’t remember if we needed to export the video as 1920 x 1080 or is we already now had to export it as 1080 x 1200 or 1200 x 1200 so we have exported the mp4 file in all these version ready for importing into premier and converting it into the some format. This would make sure down the line we don’t need to back track and wait for a new export to continue with the dome export and testing it on Wednesday.
