Everything about Arthur’s hospital stay is terrible, but John holds a certain fear at night. When all the lights go out, it is only John with his thoughts and what he can see in the dark. One night, however, he sees a strange creature: one that lights up all on its own, providing some meager comfort to what John fears most.

It’s not weird to talk to a bug.

so someone said something and my dress-up game trained brain took over. quite proud tbh. also i believe this here John counts as a catboy, doesn't he, @meowlevolentweek ?

@meowlevolentweek a belated day 3: service animal. 480 words.

John was objectively having… well, he was having a day. Maybe A Day. Capitalized. 

And Arthur. Arthur was delighted. 

“Isn’t she sweet?” he asked, smiling blindly towards him with such pure joy on his face that John’s words died in his throat as he watched Arthur bury his fingers in the goat’s black fur. Its eyes were green and lurid, its horns far too long - all six of them - and he knew under its long, coal-dark coat, its extra legs must be hidden, tucked up close to its belly. 

… Her belly. 

Arthur had named her on the way home. 

Lady. 

And she looked up at John with such a knowing look in her eyes that John had no doubts this was some cosmic joke. 

They’d gotten out. They’d managed to slip away from the King, slip away from his own past and all the fucking games, and now. Now he leaves Arthur alone for one morning, lets him head off to the godsdamned farmer’s market alone because he didn’t need to be coddled, John and waved his cane like his pride and joy and of course Arthur comes back with a piece of The Black Goat hooked up in a little guide harness. 

A piece of The Black Goat with her eyes narrowed in… delight?? As Arthur’s fingers scratched affectionately at the bases of her horns and cooed at her. 

John was going to die. Not of any foreseen horror from their past, but from the sheer effort required to bite back his words as Arthur praised his good sweet Lady for being so smart, so clever, so helpful! 

He could see the extra eyes on the thing wink shut before Arthur’s fingers could find them. See her lean into his touch like a tamed hound as Arthur buried his hands in her fur and remarked with such delight at how lovely the texture was. 

Of course it was lovely. Of course she was helpful and clever, though John couldn’t begin to fathom what game exactly was being played here, or why she seemed perfectly content in the harness as Arthur gave her a pat and fondly listened to her trot away to the front door where - ah, yes. Where she used a tentacle to open the doorknob, not even bothering to hide it from him as she closed it behind herself and went to gnaw on the lush clover and a sparrow that was too slow to dodge, but of course Arthur just smiled and sighed and looked towards John, absolutely oblivious to the faint crunching sounds from outside as Lady made herself at home. 

What he wouldn’t give to give Arthur back his eyes. 

“Isn’t she just wonderful? Smartest service animal I’ve ever, haha, well. Not seen I suppose, but she was just perfect helping me home!” 

John exhaled. 

He could handle this. It was just one Goat.
