Today's Gear Breakdown: Rockenberg’s Punk Nights - Classic Leather Boots Redone: The Rockenberg Touch

In the world of leather footwear, the black leather boot stands as a timeless classic. Rockenberg pays homage to the iconic fashion staple while incorporating their own thoughtfully innovative modifications with their Punk Nights.

One of the first characteristics of the boots that catch the eye is the straight bar lacing. Also known as just bar or military lacing, this method of lacing–beyond its aesthetic appeal–serves the functional needs of battling inkfish by ensuring a roomier fit, reducing pressure points, and providing extra security. It's a nod to military values of uniformity and neatness, as well as practicality.

With a closer look, the leatherwork and stitching of the design are quite unique. Unlike conventional black leather boot styles like the representative Dr Marten’s 1460s, the Punk Nights have distinct leather cuts and stitching that really add to their character and ambience: the presence of stitches along the toe box that form a distinguishing line from the main body of the vamp without the use of a physical toe cap, the uniquely straight edged–rather than curved/arched–quarter panels and their corresponding throat stitches, as well as the absence of heel counters and foxing on the back of the shoe, constituting a more smooth and sleek appearance.

The Rockenberg Punk Nights have a delectable silhouette, being a bit more rounded and ballooned than the more rigid profiles of other standard BLBs, like the previously mentioned 1460s. This is thanks to the well-pronounced toe box, and emphasized outer soles. The dilation of size and attention toward the bases of the boots is intuitively balanced out by their collars; the thicker breadth of the rims and slight outward flair not only compliment the larger foundation, but also suggest the presence of extra padding, increasing wearability and comfort over longer periods of time and during splat battles. I love how Rockenberg really played with proportions in the design of these Punk Nights, making subtle, yet impressive and meaningful alterations to an already well-loved classic boot.

Today's Gear Breakdown: Splash Mob's Hype Stripe Button Up - The Tale of the Placket and the Stripe

What's better than a nice muted green accessorized with pops of color? Nothing. I love the subtle incorporation of colors in this piece, from the purple Splash Mob logo to the yellow stitching that uniquely runs along every seam and edge—these additions add so much, yet not enough to take away from the charming greenness of this banded collar shirt.

Colors aside, the structure of this piece is quite special. I have to mention the wonderful curve at the bottom of the front placket; this detail can easily be overlooked with its near-perfect camouflage into the thick-striped pattern, but once detected, it is definitely a memorable characteristic of this top. Continuing with plackets, the plackets found on the sleeves are almost cheekily amalgamated with the cuffs. The sleeve plackets run through the cuffs, ingeniously merging the two conventionally-independent parts with a single placket, as well as a tidy set of buttons.

The cropped length—which is nicely accentuated by the choice of green hem that also forms a clean end to the vertically-running stripes—and lateral slits of this piece not only preserve the more "city-casual" and "street" themes of fashion and gear in this world, but also reiterate its core foundations of movement and motion as a third-person shooter game.

Today’s Gear Breakdown: Skalop’s Wharfside Cap - Seemingly Standard, but Beautifully Nonconforming With a Closer Look

Simple at a glance— the details are what really make this piece special: the corduroy, the extra stitching on each of the six head panels, the classic Skalop logo on the side, and of course, the arrowed buckle closure. I personally love the material choice of this hat, the wales of the corduroy add so much more than the conventional canvas for brimless caps. Speaking of wales, I love how they are sloped at an angle on this piece, unlike most corduroy brimless caps whose wales are vertically straight. This utilization of incline not only prevents the convergence of lines that form peaks along the seams of standard corduroy brimless caps, but also creates a sense of uniformity in the panels of this hat.

This piece, like the majority of gear in the Splatoon series, changes color depending on the users’ most recently used ink color in battle! It’s fun to experience the different characters of each colorway.
