Matt “The Terror” Serra Calls It A Career...
Last week, former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight Champion Matt “The Terror” Serra, decided to hang up his gloves and retire from the sport of Mixed-Martial-Arts (MMA).
In an interview with Newsday, Serra recalls the beginning of what ultimately sealed his fate to walk away from the sport he loved.
The beginning of what would prove to be a crazy ride started when Serra felt a pain in his left arm after a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu session at one of his academies on April third. The scrappy 39 year-old chalked it up as nothing more than a pulled muscle, and didn’t give it much more thought.
Two days later, while working as a corner man for one of his fighters, the pain was back and worse than before. By 2 a.m. he couldn’t even lift his hand to touch his neck, that’s when he finally decided to drive himself to the emergency room at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, New York.
After a few tests, two blood clots were found in his arm and another in his lungs. Doctors put Serra on blood thinners to address the clot in his lungs. For now he’ll be injecting himself in the abdomen with a high dose of Lovenox (a drug that prevent blood from clumping up as is flows through your body), every day for at least the next three months. A thankful Serra recalls:
“Then I got freaked out. You don’t catch that [and] after the lung, that stops your heart or your brain. Then you’re done. I’m very fortunate to, basically, be here. Sounds kind of morbid. If I didn’t catch that — I was about to go to bed. I’m like, man, something’s not feeling right.”
Terrorizing the Terror:
Last week, while giving an interview to the MMA Hour’s Ariel Helwani (May 27th, 2013), Serra was asked what exactly the name of the medical condition was that landed him in the emergency department, and in classic Serra fashion he responded with:
“I have a weird disorder, or whatever you wanna fuckin’ call it. It’s some kind of… what is it called? The boom-boom syndrome. Ah, I forgot the fuckin’ name of it. My wife knows.”
So, instead of bugging Serra’s wife with your questions, we here at Injury-Duty figured it’d be a perfect opportunity for us to help clear things up.

[ UFC 160 - Forrest Griffin  ] : “Everybody Loves An Original"
Last night at the UFC 160 post fight conference, the "Original" Ultimate Fighter, Forrest Griffin announced his retirement. Forrest was forced to pull out of 2 of his last 3 fights due to injuries, most recently in December of 2012 he suffered a torn MCL and an ACL strain.
We think this was a good call for the 33 year-old, he's got nothing left to prove. He'll always be remembered for his huge heart, both in and out of the cage.
Team Injury-Duty would like to wish Forrest all the best in his future endeavors!

It’s always fun to hear Joe Rogan drop tidbits of information about interesting conversations he’s had with fighters. And, most recently during episode #311 of the JRE Podcast, Rogan shared a little about a conversation he had with the legendary Chuck “The Ice-Man” Liddell in regards to his thought about getting KO’ed, and his inability to take punishment towards the latter part of his career. Take a listen:
Transcription of Rogan’s Conversation:
Joe Rogan: “I actually talked to Chuck Liddell about this. And what Chuck says is that, first of all, Chuck was legendary for his ability to take a punch. Legendary.
He was just tough as fuck. He would bite down on his mouth piece, and swing at you. You know, like, Alistar Overeem and him fought in Pride in the Grand Prix, the 203 lbs. Grand Prix, their version, I don’t think they called it light-heavy weight. I think they called it Middle-Weight. And, Alistair put it on him in that first round, and tagged him. Hit him with some vicious shots. But, Chuck Liddell just gritted down, and eventually carcked Alistair with an overhand right and had him wobbled and jumped all over him, and stopped him.
If he was, a lot of other guys would have went down after that first round. But, Chuck was just so tough! You couldn’t stop him. His mind was so strong, he was coming at you. He was so determined. And what he (Chuck) said was that his body recognized that his mind was going to make it take more damage. So, his body would shut off. His consciousness would actually shut itself off, because it had known that this, this leads to damage. When you get hit like this, if you let this guy drive you, he’s going to keep going until the fucking wheels fall off, and he’ll take a hundred shots to the head to just deliver one. And then, you gotta deal with the consequences of that.
So, the body would shut itself early. So when he’d be getting tagged, and your brain says “That’s it! Check, please!” And, just wants to shut you off.
If you look at Chucks last fight, his fight with Rich Franklin, perfect example because he looks in tremendous shape. He looks fucking scary. He’s really ripped. His wife is a fitness enthusiast, and she got him eating healthy and wearing a heart-rate monitor, doing all this shit he had never done before. Counting his calories everyday, and eating really healthy foods. He got in super good shape. He was like down for this Rich Franklin fight. Broke Rich Franklin’s arm with a big kick in the first round. Rich Franklin was fucked going into that second round. And Chuck is just going after him, and he gets clipped with a punch that, 5 years ago, he would have ate it like a cookie. He would have just ate that punch and fucking swung on you, but his brain said “Check, please!” And just shut him off.
It was literally not a case of ability, and not a case of will. But, it was just a case of he took too many shots. According to Chuck, and he would know better than anybody, and he’s very honest about it (that’s what happened).”
