Update:
Social withdrawal is regarded as a typical symptom of ADHD because social interactions don't elicit any positive emotions. All they can offer is the risk to make you feel bad.
(I did not talk to anyone except my parents for five whole years.)
ADHD is why I've always felt lonely
I just had the strangest realization.
For as long as I can remember I've had trouble feeling like I have a connection with people. Even when I know the other person genuinely considers me a friend. For me, on the other hand, there just was always something missing. Additionally, I often felt the need to fake my interest in a conversation. Although I could see that the topics were "objectively" interesting, I just couldn't care and I didn't really know why.
These last days I've been reading up on what ADHD actually is. It's often compared to your mind being in a state of feeling threatened—just without an actual threat present. For instance, in the face of danger it is vital to have your attention directed at how to get rid of it. Everything else is now utterly uninteresting. Similarly in ADHD, what is interesting or uninteresting is felt so much stronger. And the vast majority of things just are not that interesting.
What surprised me is that a lack of empathy is also considered a typical symptom of ADHD. It's not that the ability per se is impaired. Rather, empathy is coupled with interest. And as I said, many people with ADHD find it difficult to find anything at all interesting. This also applies to most people and specific social interactions. The majority of them are not interesting enough to you to spark your empathy.
This describes my experience so well. ADHD explains why it's hard to feel interest. Little interest means little empathy. And without a genuine empathic resonance with other people I can't feel a connection.
ADHD is why I've always felt lonely. I think my head just exploded.

The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition (Kharfi "DJDK" Remix)
I'm in the mood to dance.
I can't stress enough how amazing that is for someone who's been chronically depressed for years. I'm so happy I feel kind of normal thanks to being in ADHD medication now.
Feeling normal is such a relief that it makes me want to cry. Maybe I'll dance and cry. It'll be awesome :)
