I’d say the real damage of “virtue-signaling” comes when people believe that voting in a presidential election genuinely determines their moral alignment.

I feel like if you are in the Tolkien fandom and make AI fanart to his works, especially Silmarillion, you are massively missing the point and should go back to the source text

I think something people get fundamentally wrong about the AI art issue is that they think artists hate AI art because they don't consider it art, when it was never really about this aspect as art is completely subjective. The problem with AI art is that it steals the hard work of artists. That it exists and is able to create something decent only because there are artists out there who share their work with pride, only for a bot to take pieces of what they make, simply rip off the visual effects and textures they spent years perfecting, and generate a random prompt for That Guy who thinks artists asking for money are bonkers. It doesn't matter if it's pretty or surreal in a cool way, it is stealing the labor of artists who struggle every day to earn the bare minimum to survive.

the thing about goncharov mania that gets me is that this used to be a common occurrence. I remember when I first got s tumblr almost a decade ago now and there was a new big meme every week and a half to 2 weeks. People used to do meme compilations at the end of the year for each month on a timeline and sometimes it seemed like ages ago other times it felt like only a day since you'd seen something last. I dunno what happened to it, that constant stupid fun, but I miss it. And goncharov has been the closest we've gotten to it in a while.

Tumblr is generating foot traffic for the first time in years (which is good and nice) but I am at a loss on what should I be posting. Back in the day I mostly did Tolkien and silmarillion content and since then I had to grow out of the fandom. Would anyone be interested in my little boring personal work? I just found this old post and since I have graduated from uni in Manchester I can add something:

Do not, and I can not stress this enough, become an alcoholic. Try to avoid it.

also be careful what drugs you take. (Like all people who drop ACID believe they discovered some amazing new form of style but it always looks exactly the same)

And always, always, always try to be in the safest possible place. It is usually important to have some form of safe space where you can draw in peace and not fear for your life and safety. I know it’s not always possible, but I used to believe “wow progress only happens outside the comfort zone” and oh boy you do need that comfort zone.

hey, do you have any tips on surviving art school?

I can only share some things that helped me in one of polish secondary art schools (liceum plastyczne), but I think it applies everywhere.

1. YOU HAVE TO LOVE THIS SHIT. I don’t know what kind of art are you doing, but whatever it is- in art school you will be doing it A LOT. So you better enjoy doing it, otherwise it will be a never ending nightmare.

2. Do your assignments, go to class etc- it can be hard sometimes but it helps. 

3.Try to figure out your teachers quirks- Teachers are people too, and everyone of them has some kind of aesthetic. Once I found out my teacher has a shoe fetish, my life became much easier. This way with a little bit of cleverness and luck you can have the best grades ever.

4. Be creative with art supplies-  all this crap is expensive, and sometimes there is no need for uuuhh… Fashionable art supplies. In our school it is popular to buy a bucket of white paint at building shop, or mix acrylics with ink when you run out of black paint. but I am not sure about this one, how it applies at places that aren’t Poland.

5. Just… don’t… give up.- It gets hard sometimes. Just.. keep going. One foot in front of the other.

Yup, that would be all I can say in that matter. Please remember I am in equivalent of art high scholl, I am applying for art university just now, so i can’t say anything about this kind of school. Any way good luck.
