Everything you ever wanted to know about folding knives and their applications
In the world of blades, the folding knife, often known as the pocket knife, is one of the most creative creations ever. Folding knives have been around for a long time, dating back to the Iron Age, when man first discovered how to use iron. The history of mankind has changed the instant the pocket knife was introduced. But what is a folding knife, exactly?
When not in use, this is a sort of high-quality knife with one or two handles that fold back into the knife's handle. They are incredibly useful since they can be put into a pocket and no one will notice that you are carrying one. We'll go through all there is to know about folding knives, from the many varieties to the various applications. This is for you if you've been thinking about getting a pocket knife but don't know where to start.
Tumblr media
8 main varieties of folding knives
The pocket knife family includes a variety of distinctive knives that may be used for a variety of tasks when hunting or camping. Because of their tiny and folding shape, they are the most adaptable outdoor knives. Some of the most common folding knife varieties are listed here.
The Peasant Knife
The peasant knife is one of the earliest styles of folding knives, appearing several years ago. They are said to be the forerunners of current pocket knives, although, unlike modern ones, they did not have any locking mechanism. They were simply designed to swivel at a pivot which kept the blade open in case the owner needed it at any time. It is comparable to the current shaving razor used in the majority of barbershops.
The Slip Joint Knife
The slide joint knife became popular in the 1600s as a consequence of changes made to existing blades of the time. The difficulty with early pocket knives was that there was no locking mechanism to keep them in place once they were open for usage or to keep them closed. For many, this made cutting a bit of a pickle, resulting in hand injuries. The sliding joint knife was the solution to this problem.
The Barlow Knife
A Barlow knife was the forerunner of the multitool. It was designed by a man named Barlow in England. It was essentially a multitool with two blades, one small and the other longer, all of which fit into the same compartment in the handle. The handle had an extended and oval-shaped construction with groove markings all over it to improve grip when in use. The Barlow knife was made for modest jobs like breaking open a food can or drilling a hole in the wood; nothing more difficult, like cutting a rope or splitting firewood for kindling.
The Camper Knife
A camper knife is a step up from the Barlow. It resembles a modern-day multi-tool since it comes with a variety of cutting and drilling instruments that all fit into the handle. It's one of the most useful knives to carry while going camping since it contains a tool for any activity, whether it's opening a can, using a screwdriver, or cutting a piece of fabric to make a bandage in an emergency. The camper knife was the inspiration for the renowned Swiss army knife.
The Canoe Knife
The canoe knife gets its name from its handle, which is fashioned like a canoe and dips in the center before rising up on both sides to create a small curve. Two blades, one larger than the other, fit into that handle from both ends. The canoe knife is perfect for easy tasks like opening a can or prying anything stuck in the ground, a wall, or something else. It's a little knife that folds up small enough to fit in your pocket and makes a fantastic addition to your collection.
The Congress Knife
The congress knife resembles the canoe knife in appearance, with the exception that its central curve faces up rather than down. Another significant distinction between the two is the number of blades. The congress knife contains four blades: two large ones and a smaller pair. Each has its own distinct shape and function. When the knife is closed, all of the blades meet in the middle, thus the name Congress.
The Tanto Knife
The Tanto is a Japanese knife with one of the most unusual forms you'll ever see. It's a straight blade with a sophisticated wooden grip and a detachable wooden sheath that resembles a little box. On the interior, the blade is similarly formed like a rectangle, with a sharply pointed tip that draws blood with a single touch.
The Pen Knife
A pen knife's initial use was to sharpen the quills that were used in conjunction with ink to make written texts. The end of the quill was whittled using pen knives to form a sharp tip known as a pen nib. The knife was used to restore a sharp tip to the quill pen when the nib went down from usage.
A pen knife today may have a variety of helpful tools. In addition to the blades, the usual pen knife also includes nail files and toothpicks for instant personal hygiene. Awls and reamers are excellent quick tools for little woodworking projects. Scissors and corkscrews are essential cooking equipment as well as camping equipment.
Best ways to sharpen folding knives
Sharpening a folding knife is more complicated than most people think. This isn't a kitchen knife that can be thrown on a whetstone and honed to a fine edge. You must pay close attention to the way it is built. Sharpening a folding knife may be done in a few different ways.
Choose your tools:
You must choose which sharpening instruments to use since, as previously said, you cannot simply choose whatever you want. Some whetstones need oil, some need water, and some don't. Choose the one that best suits your needs.
Clean your pocket knife:
In order to see the outlines properly, you must first clean your pocket. kife. Only a clean knife can reveal the edge angle and bevel.
Process of sharpening:
Place the blade on the stone and carefully slide the knife edge along the whetstone for the entire length of the knife once you've gathered all of your tools. To improve contact between the sharp edge of the blade and the stone, use sweeping motions. In this method, start with coarse-grit stones and work your way up to finer grit stones.
Stropping the blade:
This is a step that is optional, but you can still perform it. The blade is run over a leather piece with a polishing compound at this stage. It gives the blade the dazzling gloss that new blades have.
Top 8 applications of folding knives
#1-To open a bottle
Don't panic if you find yourself holding a bottle with no bottle opener in sight. To pop the cap, any knife blade will suffice. But, to avoid hurting your blade or slashing your fingers, you should definitely watch a video on how to open a bottle with a knife (there are numerous good ones on YouTube).
#2-To whittle something
You'll be an old man someday, and you'll need to know how to whittle, preferably while sitting in a reclining chair on your front porch. In all honesty, whittling is a dying craft. It's a great talent to learn and a fun way to spend some productive time.
#3-Slicing up fruits & vegetables
When you need to chop and dice any fruits and vegetables, your handy dandy folding knife will always be there. You may use your knife to make a fruit salad, eat watermelon at a family picnic, or simply slice hunks of apple and eat them straight off the blade like a boss.
#4-To open a package
To be honest, this is probably what the majority of knife users do with their knives the most. Folding knives are ideal for opening those bothersome Amazon boxes that arrive on your doorstep every day. It's also great for opening and disassembling heavy-duty boxes.
#5-For animal gutting
Folding knives are perfect for this type of task, whether it's fishing or hunting. The reasons are obvious. They're compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand without the blade extending too far. This provides you the leverage to grip the knife firmly and delve into the animal's insides in quick and accurate cuts.
#6-To prune your plants
Most plants require a little trimming now and again to stay happy and healthy. When your house plants need a trim or your garden vegetables are ready for harvest, your pocket knife is an excellent tool. It may also be used to lightly trim trees and shrubs, but a saw is best for heavier branches.
#7-To unscrew a screw
Naturally, you'd prefer to use a screwdriver to tighten or loosen a screw. In a pinch, though, your pocket knife will suffice. Just be careful not to break off the tip of your blade by accident. Knives aren't really built for forceful twisting, and the steel they're made of (particularly carbon steel) may be brittle.
#8-To cut and strip wires
An electrician's best companion is a pocket knife. It's ideal for removing the plastic coating off the ends of wires before connecting them to a breaker, outlet, or switch. In the absence of suitable wire cutters, a knife can be used to cut wire; however, doing so repeatedly may dull the blade, so it's better not to make a practice of it.
Wrap Up
Even if we had an entire day to ourselves, there is so much to say about folding knives that we couldn't possibly cover it all. Almost every civilization on Earth has its own distinct folding knife. They are useful and dependable tools that every serious camper and hunter should always have in their accessories pack.
We are a well-known pocket knife maker that specializes in blades that may be used for a variety of activities. We, at iFIELD Knives, have a large selection of folding knives that may be just what you're searching for.
