The long country road that takes one toward Roanwilde is in fair condition despite the weather, made firm by a layer of hoary frost. Field after field it passes, the bare furrows of the harvest’s end wrinkled up like a blanket over the newly-planted winter wheat. Weathered fences that would be picturesque in other seasons (or even with a dusting of snow) only look forlorn now. In the distance, behind the fields and farms, the sleeping sprawl of Salma’s Wood lay as a dark, dense line, and the closer one travels to Roanwilde, the more the Wood encroaches. This was a deciduous forest, the oldest trees as straight and imposing as soldiers on sentry while the smaller ones are as lissome and delicate as dancers, frozen in elegant pose. All stand quiet and still, stripped of their autumn mantles. The sweet hint of fallen leaves and decay lingers still–the cold has not scoured it completely.
