In a classic case of autistic black and white thinking, I thought I didn’t have special interests because I had seen special interests described as a topic one researches a lot and knows a lot about and I didn’t really have anything that I had researched like that.

I have listened to/ watched thousands of hours of Dungeons and Dragons and played hundreds of hours but I thought it wasn’t a special interest because I’ve never picked up the players handbook or read a module. I don’t know all the rules and I’ve only ever played casters so I have no clue what melee characters are about. I don’t really know any of the lore of the actual plays I follow and don’t care to look it up.

It took me way longer than I’m proud of to realise that the way my special interests manifest is immersion and not the acquisition of knowledge. You can be particularly fixated on a topic and still not really know shit about it.

Shout out to the other autistic people who couldn’t win a quiz show based on their special interest and thought that somehow invalidated it.

Van Chapman jumping at the chance of the sky because she couldn't stay with the sea. Van seeing the sky as the reason she is able to live and assuming that if she would keep adventuring she could continue being allowed to live, only to be led back to the sea by the person who brought her to the sky. Van finally settling down and trying to reconcile that she is alive without the adventure and being dragged back to it because she still feels the desire to be with and protect those around her and seeing the boatswain's job as to take hits for he friends because she feels she has survived more then she thought she could and therefore others are more important.

Sorry for the long rant. Your post about Van gave many some not fully related thoughts.

No, please always feel free to send me rants on characters. I too have a lot of feelings about van chapman. She is rapidly becoming one of my favourite of Siobhan’s PCs.

I’m rewatching The Seven and in the first adventuring party from 2021 Brennan and Izzy talk about their idea for a sketch show called Bigger! I was blessed enough to attend this show that they made a reality four years later in 2025.

It reminded me of that moment in a game changer ep years ago when Izzy said that Brennan’s greatest dream was to be a dad and then hearing the news on Worlds Beyond Number years later that they had welcomed the wizard Sunny into the world and they had finally achieved that dream.

They are such a wonderful example of what you should look for in a partner. Someone who understands your dreams and not only wants the same things but actively works with you to achieve them. Not to be parasocial but we could all do worse than to look to them as an example for a good partnership.

so van went through her life believing she was cursed to die young. obviously that encouraged her to take some big swings but it also makes you wonder what things she suppressed for fear of dragging other people into her orbit when she thought she was destined to die.

you start to wonder if van would have ended up in the same place if she didn’t have a curse hanging over her head. would she have settled for a comfortable retirement with a kind but ordinary man if she didn’t think she was living on borrowed time? would she have opened herself up to a brilliant young captain who she would have followed to the end of the earth? would she have let that captain follow her in return if she wasn’t sure it was going to end in tragedy? really makes you wonder
