The few last post used to deal with seduction. I also talked about how brands use olfactory memory to link smells and good moments or how they our fears to sell us some magic shampoo and other perfume. To put in in a nutshell, we talked about a lot of things revolving around us but we did not focused on us. People with identities.
And of course, in our case, olfactory identities.
Because yes little noses, we all have our own odor created with our natural smells and all the perfumes that we can use : soap, shampoo, cream, perfume, our home smell etc.
But if it can be really difficult to figure out what is our identity, it is even more hard to smell our olfactory identity.
However, we are able to smell others ones. This guy you had a crush on smells like wood, spices and fresh laundry. Your mother smells like sweet cakes, roses and a kind of clean odor. This b**** smells like … Well, no need to develop.
I asked my friends about to make my olfactory portrait and it seems that I smell like vanilla, spices and rice just cooked. I actually like this portrait but if I would not, guess who could help me …
BRANDS, of course !

Previously on helloscentworld, we talked about the fear of smell, which represent a golden opportunity for brands. Let’s talk now about one of the main reason of this odor phobia : LOVE.
Poor little romantics, your war against your own natural smells aims at avoiding any awkward moment during your courtship display to seduce your chosen one. If you are that careful about your own smell, it is because you have probably consciously or not understood the huge power of smells.
A smelly breath, an accidentally fart or other unexpected body odors could totally ruin your seduction plan. But anyway, as any animal, you will produce some pheromone that you could not hide and which could help you or not. For exemple, women having their periods spread some subtile smells that are saying « Sorry dude, I am not ready to welcome your little guys ! See you later ! » or on the contrary, some odors during ovulation could as well be screaming « HEY OH ! It’s time to have a baby ! ». Men also produce some pheromones when they are turned on, designed by Mother Nature to make women understand what may happen if there are also in the mood (although some clearer evidence are doing just as fine to suggest what is happening in one male’s mind). This is the little animal part which remains in us.
Extending this natural smell-based seduction, brands help us with others scents to achieve our love goals. And it works well for them, juging by the wealth of the perfume industry, which definitely plays on sex-appeal and romance.
The question is, would you rather seduce with your own natural odors or with some artificial ones, specifically designed for seduction ? Knowing that, in any case, you should keep in mind how powerful they can be on your relationship and the way you will get it.

Have you ever heard about « Petrichor » ? If you did not, you know its meaning anyway because it is the smell of earth after rain.
You probably hate it because it makes you think of sad weather, end of holidays or work. On the contrary, you probably love it in really hot time because it represents a short time of freshness. If you like to walk or nature, it also makes you feel free and relax. Or maybe, it depends of your mood : sometimes you would like to smell it, and some other time, it just kills you.
The good news is that air fragrance is now able to make you smell these kind of natural odors whenever you want and need. A good way to smell spring blossom on winter or cut grass when you can make yours grow !

// MEMORY GAME //
Hello little noses, I can see you dancing right now with all those delicious Christmas smells !
Magic is in the air through Christmas tree, gingerbread, hot chocolate, old Christmas decorations and even the smell of cold. All these perfumes are turning your Christmas spirit on, and the brands totally got it. If you have any doubt, just have a glance during your gift shopping at all the Christmas products based on Christmas smells :
Christmas teas, Christmas candles, Christmas soap to make you eat Christmas, live Christmas and be Christmas-clean. Seems a bit too much, but obviously you really like it ! So do I. But why are we so excited by Christmas odors ? (We talked about it earlier … )
Because of olfactory memory of course ! Indeed, all this lovely smells only make us think about that magic moment we used to live when we were child, waiting for Santa Claus by decorating the Christmas tree, eating gingerbread and chocolate just next to the chimney. These memories are totally positive one and thus attractive. Each time we get linked with them, it automatically makes us feel great and comfy and brands have understood that big time. This is why they develop each year Christmas products we are certainly going to buy : they represent a real hook !
This is why also, we still can not find some products smelling mathematics or exams …

7:00 AM (let’s say your day begins early)
Before starting your day, a large program is waiting for you. Heading straight to the bathroom with one mission : kill all the nauseous smells you could have produce during the night.
A Shower for you skin, a shampoo for your hair, do not forget to brush your teeth- nothing is worst than a bad breathe - have some deodorant and please, have some new socks and underwear (by the way, did you know that you could have some deodorant on your feet too ? That not being the most surprising part though…)
Done yet ? Not quite, put on some clean and fresh clothes and a bit of perfume (the one your friend bought you because he did not have any more creative idea). Ok, now you are ready.
Yes, you are ready. Odourless. Unless, your natural ones.
11:00 PM (let’s say you end your day late)
Before beginning your night, a large program is waiting for you. Heading straight to bathroom with one mission, guess what … cut back on any smells.
Let’s think about this everyday war against our own body. We try with all our strength to delete any odour because in our mind, they are synonymous of dirtiness, negligence and even sometimes, poverty. This idea was brought up by scientific discoveries about bacterias and their development. Nowadays, this idea, which is not totally false of course, is still deeply rooted in our spirits.
Imagine the incredible source it can represents for ads which can use our fear of smells to find out some new needs like having deodorant between our legs, perfumed sanitary towels or even shower gel with pastry smells. Pastry smells, yes. Like you are trying every morning and every night to put off any odour on your body, your owns and all the ones you could get during the day or the night including food smells BUT, in your shower, you will use a gel smelling like dessert (if you want to smell like lemon cake have a look on this french website)
If you are in this case, game over, you have lost your unresting war against odour.

// WANNA PLAY A GAME ? //
Have you ever played this game : imagine that you could loose one sense. Well I will give you this is not the funniest game in the world, but if you think about it, everyone - or almost - choose the sense of smell. Try around you.
Well here is my question, why would you sacrify your precious noze ? The one which has pride of place on the perfect middle of your face, at least if you are lucky.
I can think of plenty of reasons. You would not have to smell fetor, uraroma and other stinking things. By the way, you do not really use this sense in your everyday life, do you ? Except for buying this too expensive perfume when you can not find a more creative gift. In fact, in general, you would be glad to smell less, even if it also means that you would not smell either that tasty diner which is waiting for you. You would rather loose its smell than it sight. Its texture.
However, I could give you plenty of counter arguments. Loosing your sense of smell also means loosing your sense of taste. Suddenly, this diner does not seams that delicious uh ? Loosing your sense of smell means loosing a whole universe you can barely imagine.
Have you ever heard about the « Madeleine de Proust »? This magical feeling of time travelling through your memory only thanks to a taste, a smell. Indeed, olfactory memory is the only one which never get damaged. True Story.
But above all, as the well informed consumer that you are, you should know that loosing your sense of smell makes you an easy target for all the clever marketers. But no spoils, this will be the theme of my next articles !
In the mean time, just think about it … Imagine that you could loose one sense, which one would it be ?
