So I bought this mug last month, it’s small, it has that crackle ceramic glaze, it’s got cute leaves scored into it and it’s this olivey emerald green. The base is unglazed. I love it, probably too much, it’s a mug. I went back and bought another a week later as a back up. I dropped it the next day and the handle came off. It didn’t happen in slow motion and I didn’t get angry. Back to the original one then.
Last night I decided I liked it so much I’d bloody draw it and have a piece of it FOREVER (・―・)
Then I remembered other mugs I’d loved, lost, and still own. There’s the rounded one with hand-painted leaves that my Auntie gave me because it was always the one I specifically requested my tea in. Every time I get it out of the cupboard I think of her and my Uncle and it makes me feel better.
There’s the orange 70s Bacchus one’s of my Grandmas that came in a set. Those are etched in my memory as they were passed around the family - last seen in the back of my Mums kitchen cupboards.
My VW camper van mug. It’s big and bulky, you’d think more of a gimmick but I totally use it. All the time.
I know I’m talking about mugs here, but most people have security objects in their life in one way or another. I’ve started drawing the best of them, so I can hang the print in my kitchen and get the positive vibes each one of them gives out.

There's nothing quite like the fast-paced lifestyle of office work to really make you feel alive. Animation Experiment.

I grew up equi-distant from each coast so it's no surprise I love anything beach related, it's new to me. (Unless it could be found in rivers - there were plenty of those) Here are my finds from my trip to Portugal. Beautiful shells, not nice smashing against your legs in the tumble though, when the waves reach the shore...

A very quick little sketch in one of my idea-bursts - usually how an idea starts. Sometimes its hard trying to figure out how to draw what I’m thinking - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t! Maybe that’s the challenge.

Before and After: Digital Illustration. I started with a basic line drawing, scanned it in and then started adding textures to give the dogs a bit of life and colour.
I added a sneaky little old map of the lakes behind the Lakeland, just subtle enough not to take over the whole image.

I’ve been buying books. I’ll be illustrating the covers to expand my portfolio, and maybe in my dream world I’ll get commissioned to do a book cover.

So I got Adobe Sketch for my iPad. This is my first sketch attempt at a weird little portrait of an unknown man. Why do I always need to draw a moustache? I don’t know.
But what I learnt most here was that my stylus pen is so unbelievably inadequate and inaccurate that I either need to learn to accept it or buy a better one. #budgetdoesnotallow
It’ll never replace the sketchbook, not for me anyway, but I love how I still habitually did a load of experimental mark making in the top corner.
Whats the saying...’’You can take the paper and perfectly accurate pencil away from the girl but you can’t take the girl away from the.... no, no that doesn’t work.
It’s also quite cool for doing typography sketches whilst on a train, or watching TV. It’s a keeper.

Website Update!
www.hellobirdiecreative.com
A little refresh from the old one - this has more yellow because, apparently, it’s my new favourite colour?
Easier to navigate and all that.
Hopefully I can get some more photography up there soon, everyone likes a picture or two to mix things up a bit.

Happy Scouse Day!!
It’s going to be a fantastic day here in Liverpool, the sun’s kind of out too.
Shameless plug (I need a new kitchen) #finallyagrownup
Whether you’re a scouser living here in Liverpool, further afield, or even abroad, or just love scouseness in general... I have a typographic homage to a load of Scouse phrases I’ve heard A LOT whilst living here. I love you Scousers.
