Here they go again.
“Hey, Kazu’s fighting with kids from another school.”
Slight surprise flickers in the way his eyes widened by a fraction of an inch-- settling again when he sees the standoff; shoulders squared, teeth bared, both schools ready to go at each other without a care . Kazu’d always been a passionate person-- fiery, just, unabashed -- very much an act first think later type; Kenya’s not surprised at the way this turned out, at all.
Chatter slides off him as he regards the situation, a smile forming into a frown; at this rate...
Inaction was unacceptable.
( In another timeline, Hiromi had died. If he’d stepped in - if he’d done something - )
“We’ve got no choice. Let’s break them up.”

PLAY ▶ [ 1988. An Ally of Justice pt 2. ] Scenes. [ x, x, x ]
You’re amazing, Kenya-
Amazing? The honest words ring dissonant in his mind, guilt seeping its claws into his chest. Hearing that from his formerly asocial friend jerks awareness into his thoughts, of how his heart seemed to beat loud-- he breaks his gaze away from Satoru’s, fixing his gaze at the edge where wall and staircase met. It’s almost too long a pause as he gathers his words. His hands curl in his pockets -
“There are other explanations for your change.”
Continuing on with his explanation, unfettered. Logic easily yielded itself to various explanations -- all in favor of Satoru’s innocence, of unchange.
“Satoru, you first came up with the rule of ‘not going to the secret base when there was snow.’ But you just said ‘let’s go there’. That’s because ‘you lost your gloves there’. You stopped talking with our local accent because you must’ve thought using a Tokyo accent was more mature and sounded persuasive. I do the same thing...”
Not that Hokkaido had its own charm, but when he wanted to be taken seriously -- and prove himself as an adult...
“But maybe that only works on kids.”
... Inconsistencies, and observations that clashed with each other. The familiarity that Satoru had, the ‘indifference’ and ‘shallowness’ that he’d observed-- it was all gone. In its place was intense focus and--
“When it came to the book I hadn’t lent you, you were so preoccupied with other things in your head, you couldn’t remember anything. You simply thought ‘if Kenya says so, I must have borrowed the book.’”
What was it like? To have a will that strong? To be so intensely focused on a goal, that all else faded away? Apathy lines his own posture, and he grits his teeth; it was in such stark contrast to Satoru’s will power and beliefs. The strength he sees now in Satoru-- he wonders where it had stemmed from.
“I asked other friends, too. Seems like no one else noticed it. I must be the only one in class who did notice it. It happened on that day when you started staring at Hinazuki all the time.... No.”
He was special, that way. He was more mature, more observant-- or so he liked to think. Long ago, he’d think it put him in a place of superiority, but now he realizes he wasn’t better than the rest.
And... maybe he wasn’t the only one so observant...
“Maybe she noticed, too.”
Hinazuki, the girl he’d thought he could leave alone-- that others would do something about--
“I knew ... about Hinazuki’s scars. That’s how I figured out your change...”
and how wrong he was.

PLAY ▶ [ 1988. An Ally of Justice. ] Scenes. [ x , x ]
It’s February 17th when it first happens. It was like he was out of a film, Kenya’d say later, when he was 29 and deep in thought -- the Heisei era resting on his shoulders, wearing the 2000′s like a second coat, comfortable, even as the 1980′s flickered in his mind.
It was like he -- Satoru was out of a film -- not one from 1988, but one from the 2000′s. Where films were more blockbuster, more cutting edge, more vibrant -- something out of left field and addicting for people 20 years back, and where he couldn’t just put a finger on what exactly was different, but -- but new and compelling, one that felt like it’d put the rest of the film industry to shame.
Things had started to change, then. When Satoru’d taken that first step into that film, and brought the story to him. He’d noticed. He really had. Hinazuki’s bruises, scars, but he’d only been a spectator, as if he’d been looking at it through a screen; he’s good at situations, he echos in his mind, but never solutions. The detective work is simple, puzzle pieces that come together into a firm hypothesis, one that intuition confirms with a confidence level of 0.01%. The abuse is there.
Help... isn’t.
Yashiro-sensei, are you going to do anything? Yashiro-sensei?
“Since I feel a bit guilty about all this, I’ll share a secret with you,” he starts, two steps below where Satoru was standing- “People often say that ‘eyes tell more than words,’ but you can actually read a person’s mind better when you look at the other person from a distance, like this.”
Especially from this downward angle, where it was easier to see his clenched fist, the way his irises contracted, the slight shake of the arm-
“Satoru, do you have a grudge against me? Are you hiding something? Are you panicked? The answers now are...”
And- it’s easy. It’s so easy. Intuition slides in for him, clear as the way Plato’s dreams of aristocracy could only be met with demise, or the way his sister disliked math. There’s a small butterfly of pride that flutters in his chest-- one that he pushes down, but still manages to tug his lips upwards in a small smile --
“...No, Yes, Yes, right?”
