people fail to understand that back in the 80s social status and being friends with people who were considered of wealth was extremely important for teenagers. steve has let known that he didn't have a present father and probably neither a mother, all he had was high school and his social position inside of the place, and between the people that were popular was tommy, it was obvious that steve was around him to help him keep his status as the king of hawkins high, bc when he was a teenager it was all that mattered to him. but we haven't ever heard anyone nor seen anything that actually proves he was a bully besides being friends with tommy and some mean comments here and there that are not abnormal to teens. when robin has her talk with him saying how she envied him, she only said that he was an asshole, but the conversation was around other things he did like not paying attention to class or being in general just a normal teenager.
I recently decided to re-watch Stranger Things all over again from S1 to S4, for like the third time since the last season released, and each time I end up convincing myself that more than half of the people that watched the show don't understand Steve and the reasoning behind his character. I'm sick and tired of reading stuff where he's an ex bully who had recovered and regrets his past actions when in reality he wasn't even a bully to begin with and istg if I see one more fanfic where he's this jock asshole I'm going to lose my marbles and write my own
