The Dock of the Bay: How Longshoremen Sparked A Revolution
“L’union fait la force”, are the words inscripted on the Haitian flag meaning “strength in unity”. These words emerged from the success of a revolution which like all revolutions, was rooted in labor and consumption. Slavery, colonialism, and capitalism depend on the control of property and exploitation of labor to produce material for mass consumption. Organized labor has always been the driving…

The Riot That Quietly Cost Miami $100 Million
The Riot That Quietly Cost Miami $100 Million
Nelson Mandela, Haiti, South Beach, and state-sponsored violence against Black people have something in common; 23,810 square feet. Somewhere between Wet Willie’s and Club LIV, off Collins between 15th and 16th stands a permanent reminder of what happens when tables are turned by the oppressed. Now owned by Marriott, according to the hotel’s website “In 1993, the mayor and Commission of the City…

Got this shot at the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library in the historic Five Points section of Denver. Learned about the original "Trappers"; Black men who were trading fur throughout the region in the 1800s. Imagine that. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-z1FHRgQZW/?igshid=1fnhrtee5ipfe

Touched down on a lot of MLKs in my life, but seeing this one in Haiti a couple years ago was legendary. Especially since the only statue of Toussaint in the states is on MLK in Lil Haiti. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-uxK7EhBY5/?igshid=1qtxamd2za2wx

On this day, in 1912 my Great-Grandma was born in Newberry, Florida. Her obituary says she moved to Bradenton, Florida at an "early age", which means my Maternal side of the family has been there for at least a century. My guess is she was around four years old when her parents, Gertrude and George Anderson left Newberry (not far from Rosewood) because in 1916 a deputy sheriff was shot and killed which resulted in the largest known multiple lynching in Florida history ( see "The Beast In Florida by Dr. Marvin Dunn). She had ten children, including Alfonso "Big Cat" Anderson who married Dorothy "Dot/Big Ma" Simmons of Ocilla, GA and brought my Mama, three Aunties, and an Uncle to the world. Im thankful I got the chance to sit with her on several occasions in Rogers Gardens, though as a child I had no idea how much history I was in the presence of. Happy Birthday and RIP Grandma Georgia Lee. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-e7w4ZAp4S/?igshid=1bagznlkxessk

“One of my mentors suggested I read a book called Contagious,” says Asghedom, speaking to me in New York. “In the second chapter, a restaurant owner created the first $100 Philly cheese steak and got ridiculed but got a ton of prominent people interested.” -Nipsey Hussle on "Contagious", which inspired the Proud2Pay campaign and the $100 "Crenshaw" mixtape 🏁 #TMC https://www.instagram.com/p/B-Zvc5BgX0w/?igshid=1mob7v5rizl5b

20 years ago today, the "Baddest Bitch" album was released. Being that it dropped a little over a month after "Book of Thugs", much of the background I discussed in "Book of Thugs: 20 Years Later" (link in the bio) is the same. However there is no debating the undeniable traces of Trina that we see in today's artists and for that she/this project should be saluted. Few notes on the album; 1. The album title track contains a play on Michael Jackson's "Bad" 2. "Ain't Shit" is a bold play on and rebuttal to "Bitches Ain't Shit" featured on "The Chronic" 3. Nearly half of the album was produced by the great Righteous Funk Boogie including Miami classics "Off The Chain" and "Pull Over" (see "Pick It Up" by Home Team) 4. She taught us the difference between corduroy and mink, see "Ball With Me" 5. The hook on "I Don't Need You" (which picks up where "Nann" left off) might as well be a bible verse as far as Miami is concerned 6. Early flip of the frequently sampled "Voyage to Atlantis" on "I'll Always", not to be confused with "Always" featuring Monica which we will discuss in 2030, Lord willin'. 7. "Mama": a dedication to Trina's Mama, Vernessa Taylor (RIP)🕊. 8. Features: J-Shin, Trick, Tre+6, 24K, Lost Tribe, J.A.B.A.N., Twista (she snapped on "Watch Your Back"), and my favorite Total member, Pamela Long. 9. Production: Hugo Boss, Black Mob Group (see "Shut Up"), Dwayne "Cognito" Web (see Poe Boy Ent.- who produced "Thug Money" off "In Too Deep" soundtrack), Committee (who did the remix for "Pull Over" which we will discuss next year), Derrick Baker, and Red Spyda. 10. Before streaming and social media, on the heels of her labelmate's success just a month prior, and among counterparts like Mia X, Gangsta Boo, Eve, Missy, Lil Kim, Foxxy, and Lauryn Hill, her debut was certified gold, November 2000. Congratulations to @trinarockstarr for 20+ solid years in the game, reprenting Da Crib and giving voice and visibility to Miami women, for launching several careers, and for expanding into television and radio. Happy Anniversary! https://www.instagram.com/p/B-AcuQng26U/?igshid=xhh758h6qdtr

My Maternal side of the family has been in Florida and Georgia for at least 200 years. Paternal Great Grandparents migrated from Madison, VA and Bayou Le Batre, AL to Pittsburgh, PA, where my Grandparents met and had my Pops, Uncles, and Aunt who were raised in the historic Hill District. They were products of the Great Migration, where 6 million Black people fled the south between 1915 and 1970, escaping government sanctioned terrorism only to find a more user friendly version in the north, midwest, and on the west coast. This story is brilliantly told in "Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkerson. If you haven't already, PLEASE read this. https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Pgty_Alr1/?igshid=tctygiz12nc
