For my Third year at Art Camp I decided that I wanted to do something different then what I have done in the past or ever before. When I first came to UCM, I was hoping for a fresh start, to meet new people, and be apart of a new and fun environment. I found myself keeping to myself and not really going to hang out with anyone or open up to my surroundings. After awhile, I started to notice that even though I hardly talked to anyone, there were still people who didn’t like me or talked about me and they didn’t even know me. This got me thinking, I started to realize that even close friends and loved ones of mine hardly knew me at all either. This is where my idea for my spot came into play. As I sat blindfolded, vulnerable, and alone, in the middle, I was surrounded by things about my past, present, and thoughts about my future. Some content was much harder to read, while others were just simple facts and things about me. Secrets and past experiences that hardly anyone knew about me were scattered around the walls and the stairs of where I was sitting. As I sat there blinded, I began to worry about these truths coming to light for so many eyes to read and the emotions began to pour out of me. While I sat there, many friends, strangers, and loved ones surrounded me as they read my story. I could hear shuffles and sniffles, some people even made comments about the things that I had written, and it all started unfolding. Tears were shed, and hugs, kisses, and words were exchanged. I had laid out paper and pens for those who were willing to write their stories, and many did. After it was over, I removed my blindfold and began reading the stories that were left for me. I began crying uncontrollably, because although many were anonymous, I didn’t feel like I was alone in this world any longer. These strangers and friends had trusted me in telling me their stories, and told me that they felt like there was someone else in this world that they could relate to. Reading these responses overwhelmed me with the feeling of acceptance, and that now people know who I really am, and that is the greatest feeling in the world.
