THE HORROR!
by Hannah Cao
her skin is glowing, shining
but the grime spilling dries her eyes
her mind is alive in that bar,
the world one big horror story
oh what fear! not to care
about pieces of clothing and premature hair
you’re a winner until you are naked.
it’s so much fun to look at you as she crawls out of that well
you wish you’d done differently
but there’s enough lies to sell
SHE’S INSANE she is
wants to be a film star but also a good mother
wants to drive a fast car but acts like a wretched sinner
what horror! a brain
if only she could talk about you without making a fuss
you’re The One And Only, while she exists to discuss,
oh, but isn’t it hard out here when you can’t scream.

LANGUAGE
by Hannah Cao
driving through Holland tunnel / my throat closes right up like light turning off after the curve
everything got louder when you didn’t say a word / and I hope this goes away quietly
so I can ask the world where did it go / when I was willing to give it my time, my world
there is so much I could have said / but I wasn’t ready then
sighs are a language / for minds so unprepared
I tell them what I know / I keep everything quite low
I don’t feed them lines / to keep them on my side
they’ll never know the wrong or rights / despite

vision of the future
I give the green light in the perfect places. somewhere where the weather is good for dreaming, where the hills aren’t going anywhere. even a few days from now the bushes will bear fruit. I was born in November which means my blood runs cold. I have a birth mark on my hip which gets stolen every other week. one day at a time. whatever happens, it’s for the better. once in an old house, soon in a botanical garden. my heart is beating, out on my sleeve, but my hand’s still holding the dagger. so much for better, better, better. I was only drowning because I had forgotten how to swim. or the waves got too strong, I couldn’t tell you; I wasn't looking. this time could be different but it could also be a tired re-run, a vision of something stranger I once thought I would not longer take part in. so how will the world end? it’s genuinely not something I think too much about. there are people to love and dishes to do in the meantime.

attention
Back at the same pub after six years, I never asked for a stolen glance. I am getting a drink but you used to see right through me, and I fear when our eyes meet again you shall see how I am holding up, lying around as a foreign body, splattered and folded and bent all across the floor. Ashamed and tired but at least I have trusted with my eyes closed. You grin as you look at me, ask what I’ve been up to. I’ve been eating some peaches off some fine trees. I lit five candles at dusk. I haven't been able to pull myself together but I try again every day. I read at orchid windows and link pinky fingers for every little promise. I met a cat at night because I wasn't looking at my phone. And I worried about you when I took a walk on that hill. Too familiar, you say. Even now. But you look different. You look really, really well.
