Arthurian France
Hey guys! A few people said this would be helpful, so here’s a guide to the epigonal romances. The epigonal romances are Arthurian French verse romances written after Chrétien de Troyes and Marie de France*. For hundreds of years, they were dismissed by academics as having little literary merit, but in recent decades the field has produced a lot more scholarship on them and more people are coming round to the fact that they’re really a lot of fun. However, because of the state of the field for so long, it’s difficult to find a comprehensive list of them. So here we go! I’ve put this in vague order of least to most obscure because I love saving the best for last and when I find out about a new text I get super excited, except for Meliador which has to be last because it’s considered the last French Arthurian verse romance.
*I’m using the definition wherein the continuations of Perceval are not counted.
VF = Old French MnE = Modern English MnF = Modern French ARLIMA = French-language database of medieval literature where you can find the titles of other translations and editions listed. Oc = Occitan * = I can scan the Modern French translation for you if you leave me an ask!
The Fair Unknown* (6266 lines). Gawain’s son journeys to court to find his father. [VF] [ARLIMA]
The Perilous Cemetery* (6676 lines). Gawain investigates his own purported death. [VF] [MnE] [ARLIMA]
The Mule Without a Bridle* (1136 lines). Gawain undertakes a quest to retrieve a bridle. [VF] [MnE] [ARLIMA]
Fergus of Galloway (6984 lines). A young farmer’s son comes to court. [VF] [MnE] [ARLIMA]
The Vengeance of Raguidel (6182 lines). Gawain investigates the strange death of a mysterious knight. [VF] [ARLIMA]
The Knight with the Sword (1206 lines). I literally don’t feel capable of summarizing this, just know it’s one huge content warning for attempted assault. Like even more than most medieval literature. [VF] [ARLIMA]
The Knight with the Two Swords. (12360 lines). Meriadoc (a young man who hates Sir Gawain) and Sir Gawain (Sir Gawain) go on adventures. [VF] [MnE] [ARLIMA]
Meraugis of Portlesguez* (5938 lines). Best friends Meraugis and Gorvain become enemies when they both fall in love with Lidoine, also Gawain is there and he’s locked in a tower like a dumbass. [VF] [MnE] [ARLIMA]
Gligois (2942 lines). Gawain and his squire both fall in love with Beauty, a new addition to court. [MnF] [ARLIMA]
The Marvels of Rigomer (17271 lines). Lancelot goes on a quest to a post-apocalyptic fairyland and then Gawain goes on a quest to rescue him. No English pdf as of yet but check back with me soon because I have it in my possession. [VF] [ARLIMA]
Hunbaut* (3618 lines). Honestly I’m not sure but this one is actually about Gawain. Shocker, I know. [VF] [ARLIMA]
Escanor (25938 lines). Kay falls in love. [VF] [ARLIMA]
Beaudous (4610 lines). An alternate version of the Fair Unknown story. [VF] [ARLIMA]
Yder (6769 lines). Young prince Yder accidentally makes enemies of Arthur, Gawain, and Kay in his quest to learn his lineage. [VF] [ARLIMA]
Floriant and Florete (7286 lines). A young man raised by Morgan le Fay goes on a quest and winds up at Camelot. [VF] [ARLIMA]
Claris and Laris (30372 lines). Two friends go on adventures and tangle with Gawain. Yeah. I know. He’s everywhere. I know. [VF] [ARLIMA]
Meliador (30770 lines). Meliador attends tournaments organized by Florie to win the hand of her sister in marriage. [VF] [ARLIMA]
Bonus: not considered epigonal romances but are Arthurian and fit the time period and region.
Silence (6706 lines). A young transmasc person navigates gender and chivalry, also Merlin is there so it’s Arthurian. I can scan the MnE upon request. Generally not grouped in with the epigonal romances due to its overall disconnect from Arthurian material. [ARLIMA]
The Childhood of Gawain (n/a). A French version of De Ortu Waluuanii, lost except for untranslated fragments. Not counted due to not existing anymore. [VF] [ARLIMA]
Durmart the Welshman (15999 lines). It’s about a guy named Durmart who is from Wales. Generally not grouped in with the epigonal romances due to its overall disconnect from Arthurian material. [VF] [ARLIMA]
Blandin of Cornwall* (2386 lines). About a guy named Blandin from Cornwall, I guess. Not technically epigonal because it’s in Occitan. [Oc] [ARLIMA]
Jaufré (10974 lines). Jaufre (Griflet) goes on a quest. I don’t know anything else. Not technically epigonal because it’s in Occitan. Also, this is the only romance to have been translated into Tagalog! If anyone wants the MnE I can scan it upon request. I’m also looking into finding the Tagalog version. [Oc] [ARLIMA]
Caradoc* (n/a). Caradoc goes on really weird quests. Not technically epigonal because it’s contained within the First Continuation. [VF] [MnE]
hiiii thank you for reading if i left something out im sorry much love thanks <3

This trip is getting weirder.
Just heard someone describing their plans for today's date: latte (because they doesn't want a coffee) holding hands and getting to the hotel where is JUST ONE BED BUT IT WILL BE MORE SNUGGLY because of that.
I had no idea this happens outside of fanfiction world.
It should be illegal to sit next to someone when the whole bus is empty.
I mean there is only seven people here, why do you have to sit next to me? There must be special reason for this weird behavior.

Does anyone else feel guilty when they overdo it during trip and have to spend some time in bed on hotel?
I was on 7 hour walk around churches in town and now I feel like I will faint when I stand (nothing new). So naturally I went to hotel. But I feel so bad about it. Like I am waisting time and resources.

Is 3 in the morning the best time to make big life decisions? It sure doesn't feel like it but the brain is so loud at the moment.

Messaging people for the first time is so hard. What am I supposed to say? Like, "You seem really odd and your blog intrigues me. Do you want to have philosophical conversations or perhaps talk about fictional characters?" What! Whatever. I will just follow you back and stare at your blog with my big beautiful brown eyes.
