april & may.
hello readers. this post may be formatted a bit differently than the previous ones and i have a good explanation as to why: i’m human and learning to accept it.
so, that probably sounds weird, and to be frank with you it is. but here’s what i mean by it: i’m tired of trying to keep this blog perfect. this blog is for me to organize my thoughts, keep track of my reading goal, and share parts of myself. i kept putting high expectations on my shoulders to make this blog perfect, but i’m realizing that it doesn’t have to be. if you want to follow it, i appreciate the heck out of you for doing so, but if you’re angry that it’s imperfect, that i’m imperfect, then you don’t have to and that’s more than fine by me.
i type without using capitals... it’s just sort of how i like to type. so i’m going to type this way from now on. my life, as a university student, is never easy to manage and that’s just something i have to accept. this blog is for fun, so more often than not i will be (incredibly) late at posting for the month. oops? but it’s okay too. i can’t always meet all expectations, but other things happened and they were good things to happen.
so i procrastinated posting this because i felt this guilt. guilt i kept feeling about not keeping up with my new years goal. i wanted to read two books every month, but life gets in the way and it’s not always possible. so, while i felt guilty for quite some time, i decided to get over it. i’m human and this blog was meant for me to do something i enjoyed. no pressure. so, there. no pressure.
this post has a different format, if that bothers you i’m sorry you feel that way, but i’m not going to feel guilty about it anymore. i’m not going to change it. i wanted to write about this, so i’m writing about it. i’m glad that i am.
now, to share the book that i did read.
1. This is How You Lose Her by Juno Díaz
this year, i met two wonderful girls who lived in the bedroom next to mine one semester after the other. one of them, april, has become such a close friend of mine and i am stupidly grateful she is in my life. one day, we were sitting on her bed chatting about life when she told me about her favorite book this is how you lose her and her favorite story in it: flaca. she leant me her copy of the book, her notes penciled into the margins. this is my favorite thing to do. read someone’s favorite book and the markings they made. it’s like seeing a part of their soul they they trusted you enough to share with you. to be honest, it wasn’t my favorite book in the world, but i did appreciate some of the stories. his writing is wonderful and real. and seeing april’s notes made it all the more wonderful to read.
My personal rating: ✮✮✮✩✩ // but the experience? ✮✮✮✮✮
now, to brag a minute.
i finally finished the craziest semester i’ve experienced in a while. i presented (one of) my undergraduate research projects, i got inducted into honor societies, i took on a leadership position i was nominated for, i made new friends, and i battled with some strong emotions some days. i finished my finals! it’s summer now and it’s been up and down, but i’m okay. i’m taking a children’s literature course starting next week and i’m excited.
to be continued...

Its important to remind yourself that this is not a race. Do what you can do today. You will get to where you are going. Progress happens in layers.
