Johnny: -I shouldn’t have gotten you in this mess, Ponyboy. You’re only thirteen-
Ponyboy: -CORRECTION, I AM FOURTEEN YEARS OLD AND A MONTH.
Johnny: Right… That’s what I meant-
Ponyboy: YOU BEST BELIEVE IT. FOURTEEN, THAT’S RIGHT. F-O-U-R-T-E-E-N. JULY 22, 1951. LAST TIME I CHECKED, THAT WAS FOURTEEN YEARS AND A MONTH AGO. I’M ALMOST ON THE BRINK OF MANHOOD, JOHNNY. IT’S SO CLOSE, I COULD ALMOST TASTE IT.

S. E. Hinton and the truth about her characters
Many people in our fandom would like to believe that the beloved characters of S. E. Hinton are in some way, shape, or form a part of the lgbtq+ community. While I support the community and want to give credit where credit is due, we must also accept that the author of the book has come out to say that her characters are straight. Many of you behaved completely inappropriately to this news and took it as a chance to denounce the author. However you did not take into account these few facts:
1. Majority of people in this world are straight. Of course this minority needs representation, but we should also make it realistic for those who are struggling with their sexuality or gender identity.
2. Writers often design their characters the way they are for a reason. While headcannons are extremely fun and there is nothing wrong with them, we also need to understand that these characters are the product of Hinton and that what she says is the ultimate truth. If any of our favorites were meant to be gay I think she would have gladly shared by now.
3. Most of you are being hypocrites. You used to revere Hinton as a genius and loved her for how she took into the account of how teens grow and change. Plenty of you have seen the hardships of life and loved The Outsiders because you were able to relate. But now that she has said one thing you all do not want to accept it has become a big issue and you begin to knit-pick this woman’s flaws.
I think that S. E. Hinton should be able to have her later years in peace and not be harassed by teens on twitter for gay representation where it isn’t present.
