All in all, Graphic Noiz was a fun read that touched on some serious and relevant themes such as mixed ethnicities, cultural and racial identity, and even rape. It featured characters from different cultures and backgrounds which is always a plus for me and the author/artist did a good job at representing Noiz confusion and Shiro’s trauma.
I did think however that the writing of Noiz’s insecurities about his multi-racial ancestry was a bit repetitive (Noiz repeated the same questions many times throughout the book in the same words) and I wonder if the point would have been made stronger if the script was a bit more diversified in terms of text. I did love the support he got from both Shiro and Shawn (we all need someone like that in our lives to remind us how amazing we are) and at times I wanted to slap him and yell, “Will you listen to them already?” LOL.
The romance writer in me loved the romance between Shiro and Noiz (so glad Shiro finally confided in Noiz about his past) and the HFN (Happy For Now) ending made me smile.

Shiro Ijima’’s, Fissure novels. The new project will push him as an artist bringing challenges, looming deadlines, harsh media scrutiny and Shiro’s screaming fan girls. Noiz joins the the New York Manga Artist Union (NYMAU) who immediately insults and bullies him calling him "gaijin" as a Biracial Hafu, who is half Japanese and half Indigenous and African American. The Manga Union says he isn’t "Japanese enough" so can never be a manga artist pointing out his kinky dreadlocks and tanned skin. While people he meets in Nre York City say he “Acts Too White” and isn’t “Black Enough" because he is Mixed-race. Noiz goes on a journey of self-discover as he comes out as Two Spirit, and embraces the cultures and ethnicities that shape his art. Trying to find his place as a Hafu realizing none seem to fit, he turns to Shiro Ijima, a Japanese immigrant and former mangaka with a sordid past, who helps Noiz understand that being different is not negative but beautiful and unique.

Chapter 2 lineart started for graphic noiz 3 and it will focus on Noiz and his experiences with acceptance is the art community. This page shows how Noiz is seen as an outsider as a mangaka and rejected as a respectable artist. Being he is Hafu ( half Japanese and half Native American) the manga community sees him as other. Even the fact he is working as the artist for Shiro Ijima does not seem to help him much.
He starts doubting himself and second guessing his talent which will lead to his indecision and lack of self worth and will affect his self esteem and creativity.
Being mixed race sometimes the person has a hard time forging their identity because if their parents did not respect one of the cultures or like Noiz he sometimes does not pass because he has tanned skin then it makes identity fleeting and acceptance difficult.
Chapter 2 will be exploring Noiz feeling in more depth and what being mixed race means to him.

Lineart for chapter 1 is done for graphic noiz 3. Chapter 2 will start exploring Noiz experiences as a hafu in the art world which is a topic that needs more exposure. Noiz is very much an outsider lost between cultures as he is half Japanese and half Native American trying to be an artist in a predominently white art world where he is often over looked for his class, race, starving artist, he is young and the fact he is LGBT. I wanted to explore this more in this volume.
Shiro on the other hand is a best selling author, rich, upper class, dyes his hair blonde on purpose, bisexual and famous as well as Japanese American so his experience is very different from Noiz and he fits into the white art world.
Hopefully i can use my own experiences of being Blasian and straddling worlds myself to use my experiences of being other to tell Noiz story in this volume.

Work has started on graphic noiz manga 3. I will be releasing this one in English, Japanese and French initially with possible German and Chinese translations later.
The plot of graphic noiz 3 will be unique to the series as an original story that might combine some elements of novella book 3 and book 5 along with an original story and Jade, Shiro's sister will have a larger role.
This volume will also focus more on Noiz being a hafu (half Japanese/half Native American) and some of the struggles he faces in the art world of acceptamce as an indie manga artist in New York City being an outsider there.
I wanted to also touch more on Jade as a transgender woman and how this plays a role in her life and outlook on the world.

developing real, truly relatable 3-dimensional characters
The secret to drawing in your audience besides having a great story is to have in depth relatable characters who are not perfect, have flaws and are "real." A character must have lijes and dislikes as well ad a backstory and psychology. Nothing is worse than a flat stale character. Some pointers on developing characters
Compelling Characters Defined
the most compelling characters are internally consistent with a drive.
A driving need or goal
you character must want something and the drama is driven by how bad they want this thing or goal. this creates conflict
A secret
a secret is a trait or preference or a past incident that haunts and shows what the character has to lose and why.
A contradiction
contradictions arise during conflict and cause complexity it can make a character unpredictable under fire.
Vulnerability
when a character seems hurt we are drawn to them by nature. it is a basic human trait. vulnerability can be due to the character's secret or it may come from the drive and desire for the thing he so intensly wants. the desire can drive inner strength and expose vulnerable self doubt at achieving the goal.
Deepening Characterization
some stories fall flat due to superficial characters with no depth who are flat and 2 dimensional
compelling characters are not just vehicles for the plot, they are humam beings acting out a story
Real Life
use real life people you know to flush out possible roles that you already possess
think about your interactions with others
list out types of people in your life
jot down how they make you feel
Emotional Triggers
emotional triggers shap experiences. lets look at a few moments of:
greatest fear
greatest courage
worst failure
greatest sorrow
deepest shame
profound guilt
redemptive forgiveness
Make Your Character Think
introspection is the easiest way to develip character relationships. make them challenge their thoughts and beliefs or question their ties.
Get them to Risk Something
if a character risks something for another it sets up a dependency. for example a character sacrificing for a cause.

WIP: graphic noiz 6
The final book in the graphic noiz series is currently a work in progress. The book is 75% done at this time and is almost finished. We are currently at finishing the book and looking to have it published in the next few months.
The final book in the series has Shiro and Noiz going to Comic Market in Japan with their Fissure doujinshi. Shiro, Jade and Julia accompany Noiz and Keita to Japan to experience the penultimate anime event where the publisher is looking to legitamize Fissure to the Japanese market, the home of manga.
In the next few months we can look for finishing the last book in the series and get it done.

Noiz inking a page from the Fissure manga, a gallery drawing from graphic noiz 3.
Noiz is the half Native American, half Japanese indie manga artist who is in love with the writer Shiro Ijima who he is working with on the Fissure manga. The two are in a contentious relationship where Shiro belittles him all the time.

So have been practicing Shiro Ijima's new look. Redesigned his eyes, hair and face. Shiro is the bestselling author of the Fissure novels in the story. Wanted to picture him here with his new look and one of his vices.

Manga Practice: Shiro
Working on drawing Shiro Ijima consistently. He is one of the main characters in graphic noiz. He is the narcissistic, arrogant, rich, bestselling author of the scifi Fissure series.
I recently redesigned his look including facial features, eyes and hair. He looks more Japanese now as he was born in Japan and I wanted to not make him look so Western.
The new design includes a younger hip hairstyle and more modern clothing. I need to still work on rendering fabric for clothes. I will be practicing on Shiro all month for inktober.
Looking forward to finishing the character turnaround sheet for him with facial expressions as well.
