"You know, when I first started here, I believed in what we were doing. Now I’m not so sure. But there is one thing I know: You’re the biggest jagoff I’ve ever worked for, and I hope this place burns to the ground with you in it. Because that is exactly what you deserve, you nickel-and-dime, chickenshit motherfucker. You call yourself a producer? You couldn’t produce a ham sandwich! I’m leaving and I’m never coming back. Not if you beg me! And one more thing… Who’s with me?"
A spectacular ending to an unbelievable season of television. Review forever.

Please read this incredibly moving post on friendship by the wonderful Chris Gethard, talking about his relationship with the wonderful Katie Dippold (who wrote The Heat, which you should go see this weekend).
My Friend Katie Dippold
In 1998, I moved into a room on the first floor of Campbell Hall, a dorm that was perched along the Raritan River in a tucked away corner of the Rutgers University campus in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
I don’t remember what room number I had, but if memory serves correct, I did spend a lot of time in room 109. That’s the room down the hall where my friend Katie Dippold lived.

Mavis Staples' new album One True Vine just came out today. Like her last album You Are Not Alone, it was produced by Jeff Tweedy, and it is sensational. Tweedy played every instrument on the album (with the exception of drums, which are played by his son Spencer), and wrote three songs. One of my favourite songs from the album is "Far Celestial Shore," written by the incredible Nick Lowe. Lowe is one of my very favourite songwriters, as he just blows me away with his economical and vivid writing. Lowe's strong songwriting coupled with the amazing vocal performance by Staples makes this something really special.

I am still processing the death of James Gandolfini 24 hours later. I have been going on YouTube, looking at various clips from The Sopranos (I rewatched the A.J. suicide attempt scene from "The Second Coming," which has to be some of his very best work, but was really hard to watch, especially now), and from his many great film roles. What I feel like posting is this wonderful scene from Armando Iannucci's tremendous In The Loop, in which Gandolfini's Lieutenant General Miller spars with Peter Capaldi's Malcom Tucker. It's an incredibly funny scene, with two complete professionals at the top of their game, going back-and-forth with each other. Such a joy to watch. I kept hoping that Gandolfini's Lieutenant General Miller would appear on Iannucci's Veep one day, reuniting with both Iannucci and HBO. I am saddened we won't get the pleasure to witness that, and the other remarkable work he would have given us.
