This past weekend I was backpacking in the Grand Canyon with zero cell signal or connection to the outside world and it was incredible. This is me at the very bottom along the Colorado River absolutely loving life. I’ll try to post a couple more pictures and share some of the beautiful campsites. Hope you’re all happy and healthy!

A while back I briefly touched on the meaning of my song In My Room at a little show. I wanted to actually write something out that shares what my perspective was writing it and, who knows, maybe it'll change the way you hear the song. The fundamental lyrical sentiment is this: You don't have to invest yourself into every single thing you're told you must care about, and that's okay. It's about the freedom that comes with setting healthy boundaries. I want to be immediately clear that this is not an argument for general apathy. What I'm saying is we live in a time where we're inundated with unnatural amounts of news, information, causes, political movements, and so on...and it all sits, quite literally, at our fingertips, beckoning us through a phone screen. We know about more misfortune around the world than any time before, and with that can come this dangerous notion that you're not a good, virtuous person unless you sign on mentally/emotionally to every last issue. That just isn't true, and you don't have to feel guilty about setting boundaries for the sake of your health and mind. Again, this is not about adopting an apathetic attitude about these things; it's that no human being can involve themselves in every matter without there being a significant fracture somewhere, at some point. We're witnessing the manifestation of that right now in the rise of anxiety/depression. You have to be fed to feed. I'm passionate about this because I've been on the unhealthy side of it. Ask yourself this: Is it more loving of me to be spread thin and give tired fragments of myself to many, or to commit a greater amount of myself to fewer where I can be healthy and more effective? In My Room is about being in that healthier head space, and being entirely at peace with it. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Wishing all of you nothing but the best!

The other day I saw a picture of myself from a tour that was some time ago and I was the skinniest I had ever been. It was a bit shocking when I saw it, although I remember that period of my life well. Anxiety and fear had a strong hold of me, and as a result manifested as not only mental symptoms, but physical ones. Those are the scary ones. Anxiety has a way of killing your appetite, and the stress of it all can cause weight loss, even if you are eating. Anyway, fast forward to now. This photo is today. I've realized how far I've come and I'm incredibly grateful for where I'm at in life—physically, mentally...everything. Even in the past 3 months I've put on 15 pounds. I'm the heaviest I've ever been, which isn't something you commonly hear people highlighting as a celebration but for me, it is. I wanted to share and say that if you're going through what I did, I understand. I get it. And I wanted to tell you it gets better. I'm wishing nothing but health and happiness for all of you.

The other day while I was driving, I was thinking about the idea that you can learn something of value from every single person you come across, which I believe to be true. It led me to this question, which I plan to ask more often when I meet someone new and would love to hear your answer: If you could recommend only one thing to me that changed your life profoundly for the better, what would it be? It could be an experience, a book, a song, a movie, a word of advice...anything. I'm genuinely interested and excited to read your replies.

I think about this question often: If I were a dog, what breed would I be?
