More research for my cosplay
I’ve decided to take on a long project and recreate this costume from Gentleman Jack. I was hunting for waistcoat fabric and couldn’t find anything until the sales associate at Atex Fabrics offered to dig for a match and he found it.

I’m trying to figure out the layers. Anne wears a lot of stuff influenced by menswear. In menswear the white shirt would be a visible undergarment but it also looks like she’s maybe wearing a structural layer which would not be worn against the skin. We’ve seen her undergarments (drawers and short sleeved chemise)
So that would mean chemise, corded corset, shirt, waist coat. Her outfit also includes a frock coat and ulster. That seems like a lot of layers, even for a historical silhouette
The silhouette also doesn’t seem to me like that of a gored corset with a wooden busk as I’ve seen in digital museum collections. Interestingly the one in the OT doesn’t seem to be gored and reminds me a lot of late 18th century stays. Here’s the one from the OT compared to the typical 1830s ones.
Lastly the straps of a corset in the early 1830s would be too far out on the schoulder to be hidden by the waistcoat. Corsets don’tstart to lose their straps until later in the decade so the lines should technically be visible through the slightly sheer shirt. Especially since the one she’s seen in in the OT is unbleached. So, to corset or not to corset…

I won a minor award at my first cosplay competition! Everyone’s builds were so amazing. I’m grateful that I managed to stand out with my stage appearance. I’m truly amazed by the work of everyone I got to meet backstage.

My casual hobbit cosplay from Fan Expo Vancouver day 1. The dress and blouse are traditional clothing from my home country (Germany) and the cloak is a cut up IKEA blanket
