How to keep yourself motivated for CAT

Preparing for CAT or any other MBA entrance exam? Here are a few tips that can help you stay motivated and be stress-free during the preparation.

No matter how well prepared or on track you are, the stress starts building up as soon as the date approaches. This is such a competitive examination that involves lakhs of students with brilliant minds fighting to grab a seat which is limited in number. This becomes exhausting and might lead your mind to be full of stress and anxiety but the CAT aspirants have to be optimistic, focused and keep themselves calm.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE POINTS THAT WILL HELP :

The Never Give Up attitude

The journey from preparing for CAT to going for the top B-school is not an easy one. There will be times when you will get exhausted and would want to give up this whole idea of doing an MBA, but all you have to do is to imagine yourself in your dream college and try to make you feel better and motivated, don’t let yourself surrender. You must start to think about the decision you took of doing an MBA? Whenever the negative thoughts come to your mind, just hold on for a minute and remember your dream of getting into a good B-school, an MBA degree and the other things that come along with it. Once you adopt a positive approach to everything the path becomes more easier and exciting.

To put it simply, on the first day of your preparation, write down on a piece of paper – the reason for which you want to do an MBA. This piece of paper sticking on your study table should be a solid motivation throughout the preparation.

Read inspirational books

While preparing for the examination you might have come across several theory books. which might have given you ample knowledge and have also improved your subject knowledge. But the real motivation could be found in some of the books like- The one minute manager- by Ken Blanchard, The habit of winning- by Prakash Iyer, The secret of leadership- by Rahul Dravid and Prakash Iyer, The essence of business management- by Moti Lal Oswal. These books will not only help to stay motivated and positive but will also provide a quality vocabulary and add new words to your dictionary. They will also expose you to a different variety of writing.

Goal Oriented

The need for an MBA degree arises when an individual is not satisfied with his current profile or salary or he/she wishes to gain knowledge of managerial aspects of his/her profile. CAT examination acts as a source to help such people to reach their level of satisfaction by the means of getting into a good B-school. The ultimate goal of every CAT aspirant is to get into a top B-school. This has to be kept in mind while you prepare for the examination.

Give yourself a “ME” time

Preparing for the CAT examination is tough as it involves your full attention and proper preparation. Giving 4-5 hours of your day for CAT preparation with Job and college keeps you exhausted and leaves you with no time to spend with yourself. Studying for such long hours is good as CAT demands for it, but if you ignore your health and keep preparation as your sole priority, this may affect you physically as well as mentally which is not at all a good thing. Always take out some time for yourself, Eat healthy food, Listen to your favorite music, etc. this will keep your mind at peace and a balance is maintained between your health and preparation.

Socialize

MBA preparation can be tough but that doesn’t mean it should come at the cost of your personal and social life. You can talk to your friends and family as they will always be there to support you and will listen to you when you want them to. Never cut yourself off from your friends or family as they are your support system. Let yourself explore as only sitting for hours and studying will make your mind exhausted. So, take out some time to socialize, be it going out with friends, attending a family function or just a break will do. Once you are done socializing and return to the track, you will feel more fresh and full of enthusiasm and can start your preparation for CAT with more energy.

Intrinsic Motivation

Joining a test series and having a check on your performance is one way. While improvement in the All India Ranks and percentiles give a quick boost in motivation, many of us get highly demotivated if there is any degradation in our performance. So, my advice is to consider the test series as simply a source of analysis and not as a tag of your final CAT scorecard.

Balance

Maintain a balance between preparation and relaxation. While it is important to remain focussed, don’t become as dull as Jack. Being in the right frame of mind is possible only when there is a fair balance between fun and studies.

MOST IMPORTANT THINGS

Sometimes you do things for there is no other option except for doing them. Some times you have all the liberty in the world and sometimes you have none. Sometimes you need the motivation to reach your goals and sometimes your current situation in life is motivation enough. You should be desperate to get out of whatever situation you are in. In the words of Eric Thomas – “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.”

But you can’t always rely on inspiration to chase your dreams, sometimes all you need to do is put your head down and work relentlessly to reach your target. As well put by famous painter Chuck Close – “Inspiration is for amateurs — the rest of us just show up and get to work.”

I think a better question here should be “How to stay disciplined?��� As we can’t stay motivated all the time. So, we should learn to be disciplined. It takes consistent self-discipline to set goals and manage time. If you decide to give a mock, give it. If you decide to pull an all-nighter, do it. You might miss out on some movies and some parties. It might be painful to stay indoors on a Saturday night but the pain of discipline is the price of success and it is always less than the pain of regret.

So, these are just a few tips that can help you stay motivated while you prepare for the CAT examination. Preparing for an MBA examination is a lengthy and tiring process. It indeed demands all your Time, Effort and Mental strength but then the results can be so fruitful that getting the coveted IIM seat will make you forget all the pain you took in reaching there in a second and all the efforts appear to be worth it.
