I think one of my favorite things about thick as thieves is that from Kamet’s point of view, it’s a classic enemies-to-reluctant-allies-to-friends (and maybe probably lovers) arc, but Costis straight-up doesn’t know they’re enemies! He missed the memo! Costis started straight from allies (and not even reluctant ones) and had to be thinking of Kamet as a friend by the time he was sharing bad jokes in the lion’s den. Kamet agonizes over every interaction and Costis’s brain is playing elevator music. Just going on a super dangerous road trip with a pal. It’s delightful

Some creep commented on my last drawing in a way that made me really ticked off sooooo I deleted the comment. AAAAAYY . . Still can’t quite get my pictures of Attolis to match the image in my head and it’s KILLING ME, but here, have a picture of Eugenides lounging on the throne like the diva that he is. . . . #pencilandpaper #pencilsketches #pencildrawing #blackandwhite #traditionalart #graphite #attolia #thethief #eugenides #attoliaseries #attolis #whycantyoubehavelikeaproperking https://www.instagram.com/p/B1FjmQtn7Go/?igshid=gsiishlmvqv6

Attolia’s barons needed a king, but they wanted one they could manipulate, each to their own ends, so that one house might have the upper hand and sometimes another, in a genteel, underhanded, secretive sort of oligarchy. “They wanted power,” said Eugenides with a shrug. “I gave it to them.” “You didn’t give it to them, you threw it in their faces. You opened a contest for the throne that would have left them all fighting each other like weasels in a hole.” “I couldn’t think of anything else to do,” he admitted. “I thought of any number of other—much more sensible—things to do,” said Attolia. “And?” “Threw caution to the winds,” she told him, and kissed him on the lips.
“Atté, Atté,” a little later he murmured in her ear, the battle cry of the Attolians.

I think one of the things I love about lines like “all wars make men monsters” and Pheris’s “in death, they were anonymous” is that they’re held as true even though the side of the war our protagonists are on is the “right” one.
Like morally, most people would consider “war to defend home and national sovereignty from an expansionist empire” a “good” cause. History will vindicate them. Hell, from the time Pheris is writing this down, twenty or thirty years in the future, history has already vindicated them. The protagonists are in the right, and there’s no mention of the peninsular armies committing particularly egregious war crimes or anything, but war still makes men monsters. This specific war made Gen a monster in a very literal sense. Was is war, slaughter is slaughter, even from the right side of history. It’s still terrible.

“You are promised to someone?” said the queen, in disbelief. “I am, Your Majesty,” I said firmly. “And you will not break your promise?” She shook her head sadly. “I couldn’t, Your Majesty.” “Surely I am a better mistress to serve?” “You are more beautiful, Your Majesty.” The queen smiled again before I finished. “But she is more kind.”
