5 Serial Killers Who Got Busted Because Of Careless Slip-Ups
Simply put, people make mistakes— and serial killers are no exception. Though the media likes to portray these murderous maniacs as error-free, killer robots, they’re ordinary people. In short? They’re human. And as humans, they slip-up. The thing is, unlike ordinary people who slip-up, when serial killers do, they’ve got a lot more on the line— namely, their lives.
Here, we take a look at five murderous maniacs who were apprehended due to a careless blunder.
Albert Fish
Known as the “Brooklyn Vampire,” Albert Fish was a US-based serial killer, child rapist, and cannibal who once bragged about killing over 100 people in the early 1900s. In his lifetime, he was a suspect in at least five murders, though he only confessed to three.
So, what led to Fish’s arrest? A letter that he sent to one of his victim’s mothers, describing in gruesome detail how he killed — and ate — her young daughter.
After penning the sadistic letter, Fish carelessly grabbed an envelope from the boarding house he was staying in, which had an emblem on it. Unsurprisingly, police were able to trace the emblem back to Fish— and thus, apprehend him.
Fish was ultimately convicted for his crimes and executed by electric chair. He died in 1936.
Jeffrey Dahmer
Also referred to as the Milwaukee Cannibal, Jeffrey Dahmer is notorious, to say the least. From 1978 to 1991, Dahmer raped and murdered 17 men and boys, often eating or saving their remains for pleasure. Towards the end of it all, he even turned to necrophilia for satisfaction.
Dahmer often chose weaker, younger victims so he could overpower them not just mentally, but physically as well. Unfortunately for him, his last victim was stronger than he seemed.
After being lured back to Dahmer’s apartment on the premise of cash, Tracy Edwards was handcuffed and forced to strip. While sitting awaiting his death in Dahmer’s living room, Edwards, who was 32 at the time, pleaded with his soon-to-be killer to let him use the bathroom. After a while, Dahmer agreed. As Edwards stood up, Dahmer mistakenly let go of the handcuffs, allowing Edwards to hit him in the face and run out the front door to freedom.
Naked, scared, and still handcuffed, Edwards was able to flag down the police after he escaped from Dahmer’s hellhole. Once the 32-year-old took the officers back to Dahmer’s place, they discovered horrifying pictures of his victims, in addition to a severed head in the refrigerator.
Dahmer was eventually sentenced to life imprisonment. However, another inmate beat him to death in 1994.
Andrei Chikatilo
Between 1978 and 1990, Andrei Chikatilo sexually assaulted, killed, and mutilated at least 52 women and children in and around Russia. Also known as the Butcher of Rostov, he ultimately confessed to a total of 56 murders and was tried for 53 of these crimes in 1992.
Still, how was he caught?
Because Chikatilo often lured his prey from train stations and secluded areas, police decided to send out undercover agents to the places he liked to frequent. Eventually, one agent noticed something unusual (read: horrifying): A man walking out of the woods with blood all over his face.
Because he didn’t have enough evidence to make an arrest, the agent simply questioned Chikatilo and filed a police report. Not long after, however, a girl’s body was found nearby. Safe to say, the police pinpointed Chikatilo as the culprit.
Perhaps surprisingly, Chikatilo ended up confessing to his crimes. And just like Fish, he was executed for them. The only difference? His execution was done via single gunshot to the back of the head.
Ted Bundy
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Ted Bundy. Between 1974 and 1978, Bundy kidnapped, raped, and murdered numerous young women (who all eerily looked the same) in the United States. At the end of it all, he confessed to 30 homicides that he committed in seven states, though the true victim count remains unknown.
Just like Dahmer, Bundy was also a necrophiliac. In fact, he kept severed heads of some victims in his house, and would often return to the scene of a crime in order to perform sexual acts on the victim’s body.
Although he was initially arrested in Utah for aggravated kidnapping and attempted criminal assault after failing to stop for a routine traffic stop, Bundy managed to escape. But his freedom didn’t last for long. Bundy was thirsty for more and headed to Florida to continue his killings, even though he knew the police were on to him.
After being picked out of a lineup for a string of horrific homicides he carried out in Florida, Bundy was recaptured and once again put on trial for his crimes. This time, however, he wasn’t able to escape. Ultimately, he received three separate death sentences in not one, but two trials.
In 1989, Bundy — who once referred to himself as “the most cold-hearted son of a b*tch you’ll ever meet” — was executed in the electric chair at Florida State Prison.
David Berkowitz
Also known as the Son of Sam, David Berkowitz terrorized New York City residents in the hot summer of 1977. With his weapon of choice — a .44 caliber revolver — Berkowitz killed six people and injured another nine. He was out for blood, to say the least.
But after a year of terrorizing the Big Apple, Berkowitz started to get sloppy. On the evening of his final killing, a female eyewitness spotted a mysterious man by a car that was getting ticketed. After rushing to her house because she felt uncomfortable, the eyewitness heard some gunshots. Four days later, she told police about the incident, who then checked every car that had been ticketed in the area that night.
Police eventually honed in on Berkowitz’s car, a four-door yellow Ford Galaxie, which had been ticketed. Using the information from his vehicle, cops were then able to track him down at home.
When police arrived at Berkowitz’s residence, they discovered — yep, you guessed it — a .44 caliber handgun, in addition to a semi-auxtomtic rifle. After about 30 minutes, Berkowitz confessed to the shootings, expressing an interest in pleading guilty.
In the summer of 1978, the Son of Sam was sentenced to 25-years-to-life behind bars for each murder. Today, he is 65 years old and still in prison.

Post-Coital Dysphoria: Why So Many Women And Men Experience Sadness After Sex
It’s no secret that sex has a lot of science-backed health benefits. For instance, the act can help reduce pain and make it easier to sleep. Additionally, it can also strengthen your immune system and reduce stress. But did you know that gettin’ it on has its downsides too? And no, we’re not talking about STIs.
As it turns out, sex may have an unexpected impact on your mood that might leave you in tears. Like, literally.
Enter post-sex blues.
If you’ve ever experienced sadness after sex, you’re not alone. Unless you’ve just banged your ex and are in a downward spiral of self-hate, what you’re probably feeling is referred to as post-coital dysphoria (PCD). Speaking to Health.com, Ian Kerner, a New York City-based sex therapist, describes the condition as “[feelings of] sadness, anger, and distress generally post-sex and often post-orgasm.” While you might experience PCD during a random one-night-stand, it can also occur when you’re with a long-term partner. In other words, you’re never safe.
That said, if you’re feeling like a freak for getting all emotional after sex, stop it: PCD is surprisingly common. In fact, a 2015 survey published in Sexual Medicine found that 46% of college women experienced the phenomenon at least once; meanwhile, 5% reported feeling down and out after sex multiple times in a four-week window. Though this study focused on women alone, the condition can affect men as well.
In early July, a study published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy estimated the prevalence of PCD in men. Its conclusion? That 41% of the 1,200 men they surveyed had experienced PCD at some point in their life, with 20% having experienced it multiple times in a four-week period.
The question then is: What’s the cause?
Unsurprisingly, it mostly boils down to hormones, according to Kerner. "Especially for women, sex and orgasm can release the hormone oxytocin, which facilitates attachment and connection," he told Health.com.
Additionally, sex has the ability to make people feel vulnerable, which in turn, can make people feel sad. “Post sex is a reflective period, and that can bring up emotions and experiences you usually keep under wraps,” Kerner explained to Health.com, citing relationship problems. The result? Tears— and a lot of ‘em.
And last but not least, past trauma can contribute to PCD as well. For instance, survivors of sexual assault might feel very emotional after sex if the experience reminded them of being assaulted.
Bottom line? Post-sex blues are not only normal, but quite common. Still, if you’re not sure why you’re experiencing sadness after every romp session — and you want to get to the bottom of it — we recommend setting up an appointment with a therapist. Either way, know that whatever you’re feeling after that big O is totally valid and not weird at all.
