Check out this great web series that was created by the producers of Hit and Run History in conjunction with WGBH Boston fall 2010 which details some of the individuals involved in the first American circumnavigation in the late 1700's. The ship's name was Columbia, built in Scituate, MA, captained by John Kendrick of East Orleans, MA and was part of a historical time that no one really knows about...until now.
