This song uses a short sample of a drumbeat from a Paul McCartney tune, and veers off in a completely different direction, song structure, melody, theme, etc. The song from Macca is"Oh Woman Oh Why" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzU-i... replaces the theme of murderous vengeance, and turns it into a bit of a psychedelic, nostaglic story of a bike ride in the country ;-)

This is a mash up of original material, a live performance of The Rising by Springsteen and choir at the 2008 inauguration,  snippets of The Roots and Daniel Lanois, plus a recording of a speech by Robert Kennedy, from March 18, 1968.

This song was inspired by thinking about memory and time, and personal history. Lately, been thinking there's a lot of Lennon and Dylan that finds its way into our ears and brains. Like these ideas from Lennon's classic Instant Karma:

"Instant Karma's gonna get you / Gonna knock you right on the head / You better get yourself together / Pretty soon you're gonna be dead / What in the world you thinking of / Laughing in the face of love / What on earth you tryin' to do / It's up to you, yeah you"

And Dylan's got it, in Every Grain of Sand:

"I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea / Sometimes I turn, there’s someone there, other times it’s only me / I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man / Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand"
