 I hope this message finds you well. My name is Anan, and I am reaching out to‬ ‭you in a time of great need. I never imagined I would be in a position where I‬ ‭would have to ask for help in this way, but life has a way of humbling us and‬ ‭ reminding us of the importance of community and kindness. Today, I am starting‬ ‭ this fundraising campaign for someone incredibly dear to me—my brother, Alaa‬ ‭ Edin.‬ ‭ 

 

We are a family from Egypt, a country known for its rich history and culture,‬ ‭ but also one where the cost of medical care can be prohibitively expensive. Our‬ ‭ journey began a few months ago when my brother Alaa started experiencing severe‬ ‭health issues that took a toll on his ability to breathe. After a series of medical tests‬ ‭ and consultations, our worst fears were confirmed—Alaa was diagnosed with‬ ‭ pulmonary edema and pleural effusion. For those unfamiliar with these terms,‬ ‭ pulmonary edema refers to the accumulation of fluid in the lungs, making it‬ ‭ incredibly difficult to breathe. Pleural effusion is a related condition where excess‬ ‭ fluid builds up in the pleural space surrounding the lungs. These conditions have‬ ‭ left my brother in a critical state, struggling for each breath, and in dire need of‬ ‭ medical intervention.‬ ‭ 

 

 However, the situation became even more alarming when the doctors‬ ‭ informed us that Alaa also has lung cancer. This was a devastating blow to our‬ family. Alaa is not just a brother to me; he is a son, a friend, and a cherished‬ ‭ member of our community. The thought of losing him is unbearable.‬

The Urgent Need for Medical Care‬ ‭

Alaa’s condition is severe, and he is currently hospitalized, awaiting a‬ ‭ bronchoscopy—a procedure that allows doctors to look directly at the airways in‬ ‭the lungs using a thin, flexible tube. This is necessary to assess the extent of the‬ ‭ lung abscess, which is a collection of pus that has accumulated due to infection.‬ ‭Following this, Alaa will need surgery to drain the fluid from his lungs and remove‬ ‭ the abscess. The road to recovery will be long and challenging, but with the right‬ ‭ care and treatment, there is hope for Alaa to regain his health.‬ ‭

Unfortunately, the cost of medical care in Egypt is extremely high,‬ ‭ especially for a condition as serious as this. My brother does not have adequate‬ ‭ health insurance to cover these expenses, and the financial burden on our family is‬ ‭ overwhelming. So far, the hospital has asked for EGP 15,000 (approximately‬ ‭ $485), a sum we have managed to scrape together with the little savings we had.‬ ‭ However, this is just the beginning. The total cost of the surgery, treatment, and‬ ‭ post-operative care is expected to be much higher, and we are struggling to meet‬ ‭ these demands.‬ ‭

In Egypt, the healthcare system is a mix of public and private institutions.‬ ‭While public healthcare is available, it is often underfunded and overcrowded,‬ ‭leading to long waiting times and limited access to specialized care. For critical‬ ‭ conditions like Alaa’s, private healthcare is the only viable option, but it comes‬ ‭ with a hefty price tag. The cost of a single day in the hospital can be more than an‬ ‭average family’s monthly income, and surgeries, medications, and specialized‬ ‭ treatments are far beyond the reach of most people.‬ ‭

For my brother to receive the care he needs, we have no choice but to rely on‬ ‭ private healthcare. This means that every procedure, every medication, and every‬ ‭day spent in the hospital adds up to a staggering amount of money—money that we‬ ‭ simply do not have.‬ ‭ ‭

Why We Need Your Help‬ ‭

We are trying to raise kr100,000 (approximately $9,200) to cover the cost of‬ ‭ Alaa’s surgery, treatment, and recovery. This amount may seem large, but it is the‬ ‭ minimum required to ensure that my brother receives the care he so desperately‬ ‭ needs. Here is a breakdown of how the funds will be spent:‬

1.‬‭ Bronchoscopy and Diagnostic Tests:‬‭ These are essential for assessing the‬ ‭ extent of the lung abscess and determining the precise nature of the pulmonary‬ ‭ edema. The cost of these procedures is estimated to be around EGP 30,000‬ ‭ (approximately $970).‬

2.‬‭ Surgery and Hospitalization:‬‭

Alaa will need surgery to drain the fluid from his‬ lungs and remove the abscess. This will require a lengthy hospital stay, as well‬ ‭ as intensive care immediately following the surgery. The cost for this part of his‬ ‭ treatment is expected to be around EGP 120,000 (approximately $3,870).‬ ‭

3.‬‭ Cancer Treatment:‬‭ In addition to the immediate medical needs, Alaa will‬ ‭ require ongoing treatment for his lung cancer. This may include chemotherapy,‬ ‭ radiation therapy, or other specialized care, depending on the recommendations‬ ‭ of his medical team. The estimated cost for this is around EGP 150,000‬ ‭ (approximately $4,850).‬ ‭

4.‬‭ Medications and Post-Operative Care:‬‭ After the surgery, Alaa will need a‬ ‭ variety of medications to prevent infection, manage pain, and support his‬ ‭ recovery. He will also require follow-up visits to ensure that his lungs are‬ ‭ healing properly and that the cancer is being effectively managed. The cost for‬ ‭ these expenses is estimated at EGP 50,000 (approximately $1,620).‬ ‭

5.‬‭ Miscellaneous Expenses:‬‭ This includes transportation to and from the hospital,‬ ‭ additional tests that may be required, and any unforeseen expenses that may‬ ‭ arise during Alaa’s treatment and recovery.‬ ‭

Every single dollar you contribute will go directly towards these costs. We‬ ‭ are doing everything we can to support Alaa, but we cannot do this alone. We are‬ ‭reaching out to you—our friends, family, and compassionate strangers—for help.‬ ‭ Your donation, no matter how small, will make a difference in my brother’s life.
